The podcast needs to know something.
Rory Sanye the way we used to be together.
I don't mean lately, but before it was real, wasn't it?
You bet it was. I am my cotton bar and I've
joined by Rory James O'Toole and Sandy Yorkson.
Who is, by the way, the only one not wearing the appropriate
attire for this episode. Didn't get the no this is a
Miami Vice party. We're talking, we're talking
pastels, we're talking slip on shoes with no socks.
I'm wearing white jeans. You can't see, but I'm wearing
white jeans. Right now I've literally got a
Holstad 19 on a pair of blue jeans right now.
I also wore while I was eating my tea.
Brilliant. Just to just assimilate the
fucked up home life of Sonny Crockett.
Tonight we are diving deep into the neon pastel cocaine chic

This is a spoiler podcast, so we're going to talk about the
entire movie from 19, 84. So I think the statute of
limitations spoilers has passed truly on this, this piece of
piece of media chaps, Miami Vice.
We've talked about it a few times.
I'm so glad we're finally here. Incredibly, Rory, it was your
suggestion. What made you?
What made you pick it? I saw that it's technically a
film because it's got reviews on Letterbox, and I thought, well,
let's just go, man. There we go.
Jokes aside though, Miami Vice is incredibly ecstatic and
really set the pace for a significant amount of stuff that
would turn into like prestige television.
It was some early work by Michael Mann, which we all love.
For all big fans of Michael Mann.
So this is like a very, very late edition of the month of
Michael Mannery. I guess it launched some
careers. It was a a pit stop in some of
our careers. It's chock full of cool guns and
it's just incredibly slick. I'm also going to struggle and
not call this film Vice City, because I keep talking about
GTFI, sitting with people in my life and doing the Lance Vance
dance and all that. So, you know, yeah, this film's
cool. Incredibly so.
It I was really a fantastic article by Matthew Zola sites in
Vulture this morning about basically, it's been like the
beginning of prestige television almost.
The cinematic television, the colours, the style, the
incredibly deep lenses, the framing, the whole music video
aesthetic, all kind of all the stuff that Mommy vice is kind of
famous for was there like from the beginning, like it didn't
have to like bed in and find its feet.
It was like out the gate, like straight into it.
The only thing that's missing from this movie is Edward James
Olmos. It doesn't doesn't turn up until
like episode 6 of the first season, but otherwise like all
the key ingredients that make like mommy vice excellent are
here. The only that's missing, I
guess, is like the the cameos that you did get.
As you mentioned, mommy advice is like a pit stop for many,
many people. Most of them aren't actors like
like like like loads of those of those are good people in there.
But you had like people like the CEO of Chrysler, Rocky up like,
like Frank Zappa and Leonard Cohen and Miles Davis.
Was wasn't there like a format director of the CIA who had like
a literal recurring role as an actor in the film G Gordon
Liddy? Yeah, there you go.
Gee, Gordon Diddy had a reoccurring role as an actor
form up, say a director or deputy director, something like
that. Some kind of incredibly glow in
the dark job that ended up acting on fucking Miami Vice, it
said. Said.
This show in general is pure cocaine.
Yes. And that's.
Yeah, Yeah. That was the only thing I took
away from the article I was reading, which is so.
Yeah. Obviously, like, as you said,
Michael Mann had a key hand in the production and it was kind
of a powerhouse in terms of like, he's the guy who hired
John Hammer to do the music. Like he's the guy who got like,
like the cinematography kind of the way it was and hired those
people and all that kind of stuff.
We kind of like set this, like the lighting, the language of it
as well. So it's probably worth
mentioning that. Yes, he is the producer.
This is directed by Thomas Carter, been written by and
created by Anthony Yerkovich. So I don't want to give all the
credit to Michael Mann because most of the credit has to go to
Anthony Yerkovich, who like all this is on the page like, like
the, the, the dialogue, the, the, like the whole thing, the
whole, the whole concept is, is all on the page there.
Michael Mann massively drawn to it because he said an interview
that he's really, really drawn to like these weird liminal
spaces between in places where people have to like make a
living and live, but other people come and have a
transitory drugged out experience.
And then there's always like underground money moving around.
So obviously like he's Mike Memory Vice came back to memory
Vice to the movie in 2006. Blackout.
Lots of that happens like in the Far East, like Shanghai.
That's a kind of a similar kind of vibe.
Las Vegas, similar kind of vibe, like all that kind of all these
kind of weird places where like there are regular people who
live there and there's all the other stuff that goes on, crime
and all the weird stuff. Yeah.
All here, though. Imami Vice.
Great. Another thing that I took away
from watching it again was just like how divorced Sonny Crockett
is. He's the most divorced man of
the world. It's incredible.
Even. Even even when he's asking exact
as his ex-wife. Was it real?
Like you got fucking children with that dude?
Yes it was real. Yes it was real.
Fucking hell he is. So dramatic.
He's a dramatic bitch, that's why.
Yeah, when he, when he turns up at the kids birthday party
covered in explosion residue and he's just like, hey, my
partner's been killed today and it's like you didn't even get
changed. You came straight to the party.
You killed the fucking vibe. You are so incredibly divorced.
Yeah, yeah, we'll get, we'll get into that.
We'll do a plot recap, but yeah, there's all that stuff.
There's likely lives on a fucking boat.
Like is, is cover is cover is police cover is your cover story
is going to be. You're a man who does crime and
that's it. Like, oh, OK, yeah, this should
be easy to learn. Like, we're not going to change
your name. OK, Everyone's going.
To call you Sonny, yeah, you're still easily and eminently
fucking recognisable as a literal football *.
You know you're going to live with the mascot from the
football team that you're playing in.
That's absolutely wild. There's so much mental stuff in
this. I can't wait to get into it.
And I also can't wait to get into Philip Michael Thomas's
tubs as well. The whole thing's great.
We just get into it. I love it.
Yeah, absolutely. Let's fucking go.
Let's get in the Ferrari and just gun this bitch up and down
the coast one. Let's get that Tesla, Rosa
Rural. Suspect and a half dozen drug
murders down here. Every time I've gotten within 20
blocks of this Colombian, I've had the pavement pulled right
out from under me. Four weeks ago, what about
Detectives set himself up in a meet with Calderon.
A man was shot to death. Hubs is here on priority
clearance per direct request of the NYPD.
Now, you might have commendations up the yin Yang in
the Bronx or New York or wherever the hell it is you're
from, but this is Miami, pal, where you can't even tell the
players without a programme. Looks like you 2 are after the
same man. Instead of beating up on each
other, why don't you guys consider working together when
it comes to security leaks? This town of yours and exactly
Pentagon South. Wait a minute, wait a minute.
You implying that I've got a bad cop in my department?
Need some blow UPS here and here.
My eyes only. The veteran detective first
class on assignment. I don't understand this.
Why? It's called Justice Crockett,
it's called. Vengeance, my friend, plain and
simple. Because when it gets personal,
it gets messy, and when it gets messy, the wrong people get
killed. They're all players, Sonny.
Eddie. You get high on the action, no?
Right. OK, cool, open again.
Rare for the time. Cool open New York.
A young black man stakes out a New York apartment waiting for
an affluent drug dealer after scaring off some would be
muggers with his sword off shotgun.
Click clack the guns coming out. It's so fucking funny.
I'm coming hot straight. We'll take an initial wife
reaction because as soon as ever saw these like young turfs
walking down the street, she's like what the fuck is this
grease bullshit? Big West Side Cesore stuff.
Go on because we're in New York. Be cool, Tubs, tubs, be cool.
Be cool. Tubs cool.
Fuck me. So good.
So like, yeah, he sided this car drinking coffee in a Styrofoam
cup. These guys come up, they're all
dressed like leather jackets and stuff like that.
One guy pulls A friggin knife. Yo, you got a couple of 22nd
hang on too. And then like one guy slits in
his car and he's like, give me what?
I was one of the cards you got for those, for the wax and
Polish. And then, yeah, just whipped out
this on a shotgun and they leave as you, as you.
Was like just, I was just like slowly fucking brings it up.
I was like, not today, a man, not today.
Can we can we do this later? I'm a little busy.
It's. Like let's circle back, let's
circle back. OK, that's.
So good. So that's, that's all.
That's our introduction to tubs. We don't even know as a cop yet.
That's what I like about this drug dealer peers and he follows
him into a bar where Tubs pays a waiter to spill the dealer's
drinks to force him into the men's room.
He follows him into the men's room. 2 needle drops have
happened already and he goes to commit the dealer only to be
thwarted by two of the drugs dealers goons.
So there's a fight and then one of the men accidentally shoots
his partner before he himself is shot by Tubs and like, and then
and then he runs out into the street an incredible, beautiful,
like neo noir shot. If I'm running away from the
camera, then returning, running back towards the camera.
Yeah. And he sees up the guys, escapes
and then it frees frames and then like very jarring whiplash
tone whiplash where straight into like the Miami Vice theme
tune, elongated Miami Vice theme tune with like helicopter shot
going over the shining green sea like ticket, ticket, ticket,
ticket, ticket, ticket, ticket, ticket, which is incredible.
Just loads of footage of cool stuff that people think, yeah
that's fucking cool. Like see flamingos, babes, cars,
cool. This is fucking awesome, man.
Jockey doing the horse race. Fuck dog, you love this, you
love this, you love this. It's it's like a lot of this
show I'm going to skip keeps in film because this is film.
It's keynote tonight. It's about 100 minutes long as
it's a film, so fuck you, right? A lot of this film is like being
talked to by someone on cocaine. And the intro is like someone on
coke telling me about the plans tonight.
It's like flamingos dog racing fucking babes helicopter.
Cars trying to like cram it down your throat, isn't it like
Miami? Miami is cool and it's colourful
and stuff happens. So.
I was really like a interview with Thomas Carter, sorry, and
some of the other producers and stuff.
And they were saying like they got the idea for the luck of the
show from when they were on a boat sailing into the harbour
and they were all fucked off hallucinogens.
And, and they said like the colours were shimmering and like
they felt something like deep inside them, like vibrating.
The whole city was vibrating. And then they would look at a
leaf and they would feel the life of vibrating in the leaf.
And I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah, you were high as fuck.
I get it. And.
Like. And that's, that's their whole
thing. Yeah.
So we went from, yeah, we went from doing like, like Cisco Pike
on, on the Weeds to like onto the Lacocaine.
Yeah. For, for Miami Vice.
Wild, absolutely wild. So that's, that's the
interesting sequence. The interesting ones is slightly
different from the rest of the series because actually I didn't
impression the guitar line. That guitar line is not in it.
It comes it comes in on later episodes, which is an epic
fucking guitar line, but still the iconic Jana hammer score.
And that has a weird, I don't know about your one.
I watched I watched an Amazon prime where in our region, so in
the US, it's it's still broadcast as like a single
feature length. For some reason, syndication is
2 par. And I don't know if this is on
all of them, but we had like the standard intro sequence and then
it stops and then it does a weird reprise for like another
15 seconds with some more stuff. And then it bleeds into like the
what was presumably the the actual end of the interest
sequence for this movie where it ends with like this, the brick
dancer on the street. And then it pans up to Sonny
Crockett signing on the street corner.
That's great. Yeah, I'll watch it on Amazon as
well. So and it's it's a 2 bar on
Amazon. It's not, it's not the full
thing. Sonya, where did you find the
German dub of it? Did you find the German dub of
it? Did you actually watch it or you
just say you watched it was? So nothing of the actual
original. I watched the 2006 one because
that was the only one that was actually available anywhere for
me, and that was only available in the on episode.
I was like, Michael Mann cheques out, let's watch that.
Fine. You've been going on about the
opening and I was thinking, what's he on about?
That's not what I watched. You've watched the 2006 Michael
Mann, Mike Mammy, Vice, Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
Yes, because that is the only thing that was available.
This operations got sideways, boys.
Just specifically looked, I have found the the two-part version
of the pilot that you've mentioned.
When did you know that? But it's unavailable for
watching because Amazon doesn't have the licence anymore in in
Germany I can't watch it at all. Fuck, man.
A better podcast would put another in for a VPN here.
So like when I was sending memes in the chat earlier on of like
Don Johnson, like who the fuck is this guy?
Why is that guy from Knives Out in the chat Dash?
Bridges doing here. Oh my God, boys, this is this.
This is tremendous. This is amazing.
I'm actually really happy about this.
I'm not joking. This is meant Previously we've
had Sally not watching. Smoking.
Causes smoking is just an entirely different film.
I love it. You see this is this is this is
a clear present dudes difference.
This is a difference, but you know it's not other podcasts.
Prior preparation. I know, I know, I'm sad, right?
Mentally not present, dude. But mate, you're going to really
enjoy this thing because we're going to talk about some of you
haven't seen, so there's a picture in your mind's eye.
And once gadding, tell us if you think we're bullshitting or not.
Yeah. All right.
OK. So.
This is for anyone who can't see us.
This is really not helped by Mike and Rory being dressed like
they're about to go party, look at women in bikinis and have a
bunch of cocktails. There's summary thing I could
find as a great dark green polo and I am.
I am sat here looking like I'm about to make a Scott review
rather than a film podcast. Oh my God, such a cliche design.
You so German. Laughing time is over.
Wow. So in Miami.
In Miami Vice detective James Sonny Crockett is waiting for
his partner Eddie Riviera Rivera Eddie Rivera to meet with Corky,
a minor dealer with connections to a mysterious drug Lord known
only as the Colombian. Eddie is concerned about his
pregnant wife Maria because they had a fight about her
maintaining a low wage job at a grisly spoon and he and he
thinks that menial work is beneath her and he wants to be
the sober brother for the family.
Eddie's about a caller and makeup, but before he can, Corky
arrives and the two undercover cops head off in his car.
A Corky informs on the car ride that he has severed his ties
with the Colombian and started out on his own, which is very
dangerous for small time drug dealers to do free men stopping
through a highway to review the products and Corky sends
Crockett to retrieve some scales from his car as Sonny collects
the scales, I should probably say at this time that they're
obviously undercover. So Sonny is going to be like a
middle man who's finding clients and also has like a fast speed
boat and does like the collections of the of the
products and stuff. Eddie, played by Jimmy Smits,
who is, you know, fail or Ghana in the prequel trilogy.
Yeah, he's a saw was he is he is going to be like the buyer,
right. And he said and he's put he's
supposedly come across from like LA or something.
That's the story they've got. Anyway, Crockett is about to get
these scales from the back of his car.
As he's about to do that, he turns around.
He sees like a weird device under the car, puts like 2-2
together, goes fuck, it's a car bomb and goes like no.
And just as he's saying no they they put the key in the in the
in the back in the boot and explodes and instantly kills
Corky and Eddie. Who were being replaced by
mannequins in this scene just unnecessarily.
And the mannequins are just fucking heated.
Which, which which which once again had some hysterical wife
reactions. Like what the fuck?
Vatican's like you didn't need mannequins.
You'd see the bigger explosion, you know?
Yeah, yeah, I think so. Umm, it's cool.
It's 84 and they're on cocaine and I.
Like how he how he specifically realises it's a car bomb because
he drops his ray bands and the camera lingers on the shades
long enough you'll identify them as Ray bands because he would
not be wearing anything fucking else.
These are not his iconic tortoise shell Ray bands, but he
but he that he wears in later episodes.
But they were indeed a set of Ray bands.
Anyway, as the police cut off the scene, Crockett briefs his
superior, Lieutenant Lou Rodriguez, and telling him that
he is convinced the mysterious Colombian dealer is behind the
deaths. When he voices his suspicion of
a departmental leak, Rodriguez loses his temper and friends to
pull Crockett off the streets unless he does things by that
book from now on. Also, we meet Trudy and Gina,
who are the the two women that he knows.
These are the Miami Vice female cops.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And.
Yeah, because like, they appear like it.
Like they're like seeing the bomb doing.
They're like, Oh my God, I'm so sorry.
And like, like, Crockett's immediately trying to fuck one
of them. He's like, hey, how about that
drink? Like, it's like, so like, my
partner has just been turned into fucking atoms.
I still need to go and break the news to his pregnant wife.
How about you and I have been fucked?
But after can we smash and she's like I would oh, I would sunny,
but I'm working and they are both dressed like I don't know
if this is an 80s thing. I think it's not.
I think I'm right about this. They're both dressed like
working girls, which obviously they work in vice.
I I, I don't I'm not sure what they're trying to do.
Are they trying to like be working girls to score drugs to
catch drug dealers? Or are they like trying to get
guys listening? And is that like legal is
entrapment? I don't know.
That's entrapment. Yeah, so.
That's entrapment because I know for reasons I don't happened.
To the thing in the United States.
It is the thing in the US, but it's not a thing in the UK,
believe it or not. Interesting.
Doesn't exist in the UK. So nevertheless, Gina rebuffs
Sonny Crockett, already an unbelievable thing.
I mean, he's hot, right? But I guess, I guess she's
getting a lot of his divorce energy from him.
And we get, we get, we get some more of that as we go through.
Crockett then visits the diner where Maria works and tells her
about Eddie. And it's pretty heartbreaking.
Yeah, it is. It is actually pretty.
This is the only time we ever see her.
We'll never see her again but she gets a little character beat
where she's like 7. Her punters, her regulars and
the diner and and there's like one guy who's he's like complain
about the size of the Porsche he's got.
Yeah, I should sort of give him the business and he's like,
what's this? What's this, the diet meal?
Because like, he's like, it's like he's a Husky chant, right?
Yeah, yeah, I forgot what she says afterwards.
She makes like a good joke. Yeah, yeah, fuck, that's
actually kind of sad. I forgot what she said.
Fuck, is it like, is it like he's on a seafood diet?
He sees food. He sees food and eats it or
something like that. It's something like that.
That's something like that. It might actually be that.
Yeah. And then we have like, classic
thing of like, he Will Crockett walks in and he gives her like a
long, lingering look, and she can tell something's wrong.
This is a bit like a variation on the standard like policeman
knocking at the door and answering the door and seeing
what's there, or like service personnel knocking the door with
a telegram kind of thing. Yeah, the staff car pulls up and
a couple a couple of them officers like dress uniforms
turned up like the wife's just say again like the kind of trad
wife dress that the Dodge shake English and doors that our son's
got a son, a husband or maybe a son's got the fucking got the
fucking bullet in Vietnam or in or in France or whatever, you
know. Yeah, that's not even a war.
That's just in France. And then?
You went to Paris, ma'am. They got him in the catacombs.
They don't call the tourist trap for nothing.
He ordered a croissant that he pronounced it croissant.
Out of a croissant, please. I can't believe that in Paris,
France, they executed him. So sad.
So due to the day's events, Crockett is late for his son
Belly's birthday party and his estranged wife Caroline's house.
And Caroline is furious that he's late.
She is not good at reading the room.
So like so like she answered the door.
She's like, he finally showed up.
He's got like a blood stains on his shirt and like muckle of
rings like pristine White's jacket.
He literally would smell of explosives probably at this
point. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's obviously like 1000 yards stare.
And he's probably also on cocaine as well because he would
have had like tit like and tested goods and stuff, right?
Probably, yeah. I wouldn't be surprised.
I mean, yeah. So they actually this show is
quite good at screwing around those kind of things.
Yeah. Like, like it doesn't show the
drug use because obviously it's like my knees, TV, network TV.
So like, we don't see that the drug use very often.
Like all the the illegal stuff is actually kind of like it goes
off. Like it looks really edgy, but
actually like, not that much happens on the front of the
camera. Yeah.
Apart from killing, a lot of killing happens, yeah.
It's Ray at 15 the the pilots Ray at 15 on Amazon Prime then
and medial afterwards episode episode 3 is a great at 12.
So for the actual series that just turned it down a lot more.
Most it's a bunch of killings and stuff.
But yeah, the juice sort of a bit because they do choose sort
of a bit for the pilots, especially the 80s and 90s
pilots got juiced up and the pilot episode of Stargate
actually one had like full frontal unity.
Why, Yeah, yeah, I mean. The pilot episode of Fucking
I've sent this for on the pod but the pilot episode of
Heartbeat had full frontal unity.
Oh, you did say that on the pod before.
Yeah, as well. Why were we talking about Neve
Cusack? Where did I come from?
Wow. Anyway, it's the cocaine talking
man. Yeah, Jesus, that's threw me
right off that as, oh, the pilot of Twin Peaks got released as a
movie in Europe. Yeah, that's a TVATV film, and
it had a whole separate ending and that had a bit more kind of
violence and stuff in it as well.
Yeah, very old. Yeah.
So he's at this party for his son.
He gives his son like AI think it's a good police car, which is
which is fun. And and then he's there talking
to his family friend, Scotty Wheeler.
He was now ADA agent. They used to be his partner.
And he kind of announces, as you mentioned earlier, he just
announces to the room in the party like Eddie got killed
tonight. It's amazing.
It's so good. Good Killed by a car about.
Did he notice in the background? I can't remember for kids
holding her if it's there visible, but there's some kind
of boxed toy your boxed game called Kaboom.
Oh fuck it out. I didn't catch that.
That's a great. Yeah, yeah, fucking so so so
yeah. Perfect.
No notes 0 notes. Sandy, what do you think this
bullshit so far? Do you think any of this is a
lie in front of this is true We. Haven't said anything wild yet
to be fair. It doesn't sound more absurd
than the fashion, right? OK.
I'll tell you what actually right.
Murdered by words. Stepping out of Brothers Keeper
for a second the next episode Heart of Darkness.
So it's like the official episode 2 of the show?
Is this directed by Roger Kipling?
No, no, no. It's written by Joseph Conrad.
It's about a guy on a boat going through a river, right?
No, it's. Just going through the
Everglades. But the next episode, right, has
Ed O'Neill from Modern Family and Marriage with Children as an
undercover cop who's got in too deep and has lost track of
himself and he's working in the fucking illegal porn industry in
in Florida. And the first scene of that
episode is like, it's the beginning of a porn movie.
It's like the young girl like exercising in her apartment and
the plumber turns up and all that kind of stuff.
And it gets always to the point where they're about to start
bucket. It goes on for like 5 minutes
and then and then it pulls away and like see Crockett stood in
the back like talking to the pornographer undercover.
Wild, absolutely wild. And that's a 12.
It's like because they obviously the kid doesn't know what's
going on yet. Nothing nothing actually bad has
happened yet. It just happens to be like
really obviously the salva porno to everybody else.
Really funny. Anyway, we see that Crockett and
Caroline are still in kind of goodish terms and still talk
because they're raising a son together.
And she offers to let him stay the night, but on the couch.
And he does so, I think. And then and then he goes.
And then we cut to Tubs. So I'm on from the cold open.
So Tubs is arriving in Miami. He gets a, he lands on his
flight, looks cool. We got a bit of that.
And then we get a Crockett tracking down his connection, a
guy called Leon Jefferson. So to this guy, Leon Crockett is
Sunny Burnett, his undercover alias, who dresses the same,
looks the same, It's to go by the same first name, and he
demands at gunpoint to see the Colombian to sell the squashes.
Stupid. It's like me going on a cover
fucking covers Barry O'Toole, you know what I mean?
I've I've fucking Barry O'Toole look really, really similar,
except I love cocaine. I'm a criminal with a fucking
cigarette boat. Let's get into this for a
second. I've been thinking this is all
these cover story cover stories from the beginning have just
been this guy's John Mischief. This is the thing, right?
So sunny, sunny Crockett hasn't really got a cover story.
He's just got a different surname and that's it.
So like so his whole deal is he's got a fast boat, which
presumably if it's if he's undercover, that means like the
Miami MDSO police have presumably bought it for him
right to do crimes with it'll. Have been seized off another
drug runner. Probably, yeah.
So which you know, I presume they've given a paying job and
changed the name or something because that kind.
Of stuff called the Yeah, yeah, it's called Uncatchable 2 now.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So, so that, yeah.
So he's got, he's got his own drug running go fast boat and
it's he's got like A and he lives on a houseboat that's in
like the harbour in Miami, one of the many marinas around
Miami, I guess. And his whole cover story is
just that he's a criminal. Like I'd say like he's he
hasn't, he's not like a legitimate business.
He's not got like any other stuff going on.
He's not got like he's just like a guy who lives on a boat and
it's like ocean man of questionable means.
That's his whole thing. And like, I don't know if it's
part of his cover story or not, but like when later on the
episode when Tubbs is going through his like cassettes
collection, it's all like, it's all like Waylon Jennings, Jimmy
Buffett, Jimmy Buffett, Waylon Jennings.
This is like, oh, right, this is the guy.
It's the guy who lives in Margaritaville.
That's his old cover. It's just like, uh, salty
spelling dude. Come compare and contrast with
Ethan Hunt's cover from Mission Impossible 3 as the transit
expert who talks about traffic all the time.
Yeah, that's that's it. So.
The both the both are ludicrous covers.
I just, uh, I still know what silly Burnett's credentials are
like, like where did he rock up from?
He's such like a, a Miami coders person.
Like what's his story? Like?
Where else did he like when he arrived in Miami, he was like,
I'm going to be a criminal now. Like, how did he, how do you
explain to people in Miami? Like I, I'm from Florida, but
I'm also like brand new, hot new criminal in town.
Doesn't make any sense. Well, I mean.
Isn't it like kind of established that he played
university football for them, played college football for
them, then ended up somewhere else, then came back and people
would know who this man is? This is this is like this is
like if Peter Beardsley right away and then the eyebrows from
all the era specific, right? It's like Peter Beyoncé played
with the tune did really well, moved away for a couple of years
and came back and joined Northumbria, places like Dita
Pearsley or something like that. And he lives in a houseboat at
Blythe Marina. What the fuck?
Oh, that must be a miserable business drug running in the
North Sea. Fucking hell, I've told.
You all story was crooked is kicking off going.
I want to I want my money from the Colombian because you killed
Corky and you killed the deal and I was going to get 200
grand. I want my money.
Leon refuses, but he agrees to reset the original deal.
Meanwhile, Tubbs has now arrived in Miami and he's in a club
trying to set up a deal with Wheeler, Scott Wheeler, the DEA
agent who because he's pretending to be a New York
dealer, called Teddy Prentice. And this is one of my favourite
scenes. It's.
So good. It's so good, right?
Mike, I want you to describe this and I'm going to watch
Sanya's reaction to it. Right.
OK, so Tubbs, or in his current guys, Teddy Prentice, who is a
American Jamaican drug dealer, I guess, is sat at the very end of
a stage in a strip club and a stripper is on the stage dancing
for him. It's the middle of the day, so
he is pretty much alone that the song playing is Rockwell's
Somebody's Watching Me. Like, you know that it feels
like somebody's watching me. Copyrights anyway, strike so so
so Tubbs is is sat there, but he's loving the music and he is
like lip syncing to the horse song.
He's dancing. He is dancing more actively than
the dancer in front of him is dancing.
She's doing like a very chaste striptease where she's like
still got her bra and pants on and she's just kind of shaking
her butt a little bit. But he is going nuts.
He's like doing pirouettes. He's like hands in the air, like
full body shaking. And he's, he's doing an
incredibly good job of looking like some stupid little life
and. He's sweaty as fuck.
Very sweaty. He looks like he's been basted.
Very. Specifically.
Yeah, absolutely. Wow.
So it's the whole first verse of the song and then get into the
second verse. Prentice doing a thick Jamaican
patois that I'm not going to imitate, basically explains that
like, I'm a big deal in New York.
Like if I start buying stuff from you, I've got unlimited
resources in New York. And then we're just like, well,
I'm going to try and set something up and see if we
can't, you know, tend to your needs, Mr Prentice.
And leaves with a full and then and he says, I've got a phone
number. I'm going to be at this place
until tomorrow night at the latest.
Meanwhile, Crockett and Leon head to their deal on Crockett's
speedboat, where they find they are meeting with Wheeler and
Prentice. But before the deal can be
completed, all the frickets backup arrived stupidly early
and pull up their guns. Everyone gets scared, everyone
runs off. Leon is caught.
Prentice, IE Tubs, steals Crockett's boots.
Because there's a whole thing where we just like, you didn't
leave the keys in that thing and be like, what kind of idiot do
you think I am? And then it's like pulls out.
He's like, he's stealing your boat like the hell he is.
Then we got then we got like a boat car chase, which is really
random. So the boats like steaming along
the harbour and then he's going to catch up with it in his car
and, and somehow he does it, which I think is incredible.
People are just fucking spinning out as he drives past them.
Like like it's like, it's like fucking plane burnout takedown
or something. Like he'll drive along and like
you'll drive past the vehicle and you'll see a Calig rear view
as like a fucking panel van or whatever, or like a little
little like Sudan just spins out of control.
It's fantastic. I love it.
It's amazing. I got absolute wipeout.
Sorry, I've faced up for a second there because my wife
just walked down the street and they see me through the window
dressed like this and she wasn't brief for that That would be
happening. Oh shit, yeah.
She just like the look she gave me was just like what?
Yeah, you see? Yeah, Yeah, You see, I actually
showed I'm at this actually explain to me Mike Emma's Emma's
been made aware because I got short of a fit like last night,
but when I'm back from work I was actually was like cooking
and that and goes up around I'm. Like I have a fun fact regarding
those kind of shirts. I don't really.
I don't really fuck with Hawaii shirts, but I've seen an amazing
one yesterday. Coworker had one that was
dinosaur print. Oh that's very nice.
I spent £50 but never receives a shirt.
Was deployed which was a Hawaiian shirt similar with lots
of little Sandown class MCV's on it.
Oh should I remember your share down the group chat?
You never got it. Never got it Where it if I had
it. Yeah.
Like, yeah, Crockett. Yeah, Crockett.
It catches up to tubs because tubs are going under a lower
bridge, and Crockett jumps off the bridge into the back of his
speedboat. Yeah.
Absolutely incredible. And then reclaims his speedboat.
I love that so much. And then Crockett, like he's got
his guns out like Miami Vice. And to his shock, Tubs is like
NYPD. He actually says New York.
He pulls out his badge and he's like New York and so.
I missed the best bit where he's he's revving up the boat and he
goes you beast, you so good bad. Oh, forgot how good that was.
Is that still the real version or have to be drifted off into a
cartoon parody? This is real.
This is the real. Of the real.
So good. Yeah, so.
So it turns out every person involved in that deal apart from
Leon was law enforcement. Very, very funny.
Great. So they arrested Leon.
Leon is in court, like immediately.
There's a little bit more, isn't there?
The following morning, Tub goes to Crockett's boat, the Saint
Vita's Dance, which is where he lives, bringing a copy of his
surveillance photo of Calderone. And there's introduced to
Crockett's watch. Gator Elvis, former mascot of
the Florida Gators college football team.
Oh, that's. Which he keeps a fucking chained
up on a very, very short chain on his boat.
It's extremely cruel if you think about it.
In fairness, I will see the chain looks a bit longer when
he's actually up on the deck later on in the film.
Philip Michael Thomas brings an incredible energy.
Tubs. Tubs is like an amazingly, he's
like a fully formed character as soon as you meet him.
And his character is just like big dude.
Crockett leaves to join Wheeler downtown in court for Leon's
bond hearing. Hearing.
This is incredible. So there's a judge, Clarence P
Rupp. It releases Leon.
Excuse me? That's his name.
He's very Rupp. His name is.
He is all and sweaty. P Rupp.
P Rupp. He's all and sweaty.
So so the whole point of this right is to is to make a big
deal about the fact that got Leon who works for this guy and
get out there that he's been pinched to the idea being that
like he starts to worry about his own safety because once he's
once the words out that he's been pinched, he'll get like
merked by the Colombians gang. So what they do is they have
like this big Bond hearing and then during it and we've lost
Rory to. Shall we talk about the whale
while we were? Yeah, OK, yeah, let's have a bit
of wheelchair while Rory comes back.
Rory's Rory's from the listeners.
Rory's laptop crashes like about five times episode.
But we were talking about a whale earlier on.
I think we should pick it up. Tell me about Germany's whale
problem. So there there is a whale that
is species wise usually not native to the Baltic Sea on that
whale has been deciding to again and again beach itself on
various parts of the German Baltic shore.
And well, I think it started late March already and it's
still going on. So there's people assuming this
whale is just suicidal and trying to die in peace while
looking at the beach. But of course everyone wants to
save the pool whale. So there's a bunch of people on
all sides of the political spectrum that are like going on
like, oh, we have to save the whale.
We can't just leave it alone and what not this conspiracy
theories about the whale because immediate whale carcasses tend
to be quite big. Apart from the one time the
United States tried to blow one up that didn't go well.
You don't really know what to do with them.
So they immediately was talk about like, well maybe we can
put it in a museum. Can we turn it into biodiesel
for some reason? That of course turned it into
weird argument how the government wants the whale to
die. Then everyone lost the plots on
the far right and on the far left, and people have been
singing healing songs and making whale noises at the whale.
Oh, we're doing the whale stuff. Breaching of breaching A literal
police cordon to do so, by the way.
And instead of just leaving the poor animal alone, people have
like gone near it with swimming pontoons with excavators on them
to try and free him on to push him back into the sea.
And that's not, I think a total of four Times Now.
And every time it's been like fine fuck it, I'll leave.
And then it's just immediately beached himself somewhere else
half a day later and currently he's on his way to and past
Jutland and a half flooded barge.
On a field tour? Holy.
Fucking gal. They managed to get him to swim
into 1/2 submerged barge and are currently towing him to the
North Sea and the of saving him so he will stop beaching
himself. Denmark has already said if he
does that Denmark, that's like his problem.
We're not we're not doing whatever the hell you guys are
on. Understandably to some extent.
And it's it's really weird because German social media is
just tinfoil hat wearing insane boomers buying into weird
conspiracy shit and they're all making AI generated slob videos
about how you have to save the whale and it's insane.
And if you if you think it's a bit weird how everyone's
reacting to the whale, you're worse than Hitler, basically.
It's weird that the whale would become such a partisan issue.
Yeah, I mean, I mentioned the the the voting thing.
People have created a sort of fake online voting prediction
website where can vote what to do with the whale.
And it was just basically making a joke about how you should blow
him up because everyone's been like, well, he's dying, but it
seems the wrong to just leave him there and watch him die
while everyone freaks out around him.
Wow. And yeah.
And then we came up with maybe we should put him down like a
sick animal. How would you do that?
Yeah, that's that's where the blowing up part comes.
Just a 4 LB pack right in the blue hole.
Pretty open your windows, everybody.
They thought about just shooting the whale get.
A tank. They were like, but will a
handgun be large enough? Where do I need to shoot a whale
in the head for it to die immediately?
Or is it just going to be a guy emptying A9 millimetre into the
whale's head trying to kill it? As quickly as that's so that's
no, I'm like killing a human with a spud gun.
Listen right. Exactly.
So they settled on blowing his head clean off.
They were. They suggested digging a hole
beneath his head and filling that with the explosives so it
would be immediately vaporised around his head basically.
I would love, I would love to meet the DoD operator whose
career has been building. It was then decided that that
would be a poor public image and decided to maybe not do that.
Also, the whale has two names. They they are his team more
towards the left side of the political spectrum who are
calling him Timmy based on where he beached himself with some
place called Timondorf. All right, not not Timothy
Chalamet. No, the the what it does not.
Look like a South. Park at least starving Victorian
child having up blood. The other people are calling him
Hope. Who?
The right wingers are calling it hope.
They're calling him Hope because he's everything that is wrong
with this nation. Absolutely.
Sorry, I hear about. The fuck?
Every time I hear about the whale, I want to kill myself.
Whale, whale, whale. What do we have here?
Sorry. I think, I think I've earned
this. Back to the movie.
You say something here, right? You're talking, you're talking
about how do you shoot a whale, a killer, right?
Listen, listen, motherfucker, if I know anything about video
games, you hit it with your weapon a bunch of times until it
rears up and then a little part on his head glows red and that's
massive damage like a giant enemy crab.
Move off. Dodge attack, dodge attack.
Yeah, it's point for massive damage. 6 dodge roll, dodge
roll, dodge roll like like hit a souls ball game hit a few times
with the glaze or you must have worked bastard sword and then
when the time's right it rears up, it goes red and it's like.
There is a bit in Dishonoured Death of the Outset where you
have to destroy a whale humanely.
Move off with. Explosives.
There's like a whale in a giant. There's like a whale in a big
indoor fencing plant and it's suffering and it's out.
It's out of the water and it can think and feel stuff.
And in the dishonest games, you're like carrying around.
Well, in the original, in the base game, you're carrying
around the heart of your dead lover and expresses thoughts and
for some reason in the deputy outsider you are.
It's completely different character, but still you have
access to this heart really weird and you can hear the
whales thoughts and you have the option of like leaving it there
to to its state or or putting it as misery.
I can't quite remember how you do it.
I think you electricity. I think you electrocute.
It very humane. Which is deeply ironic because
in the game like the electricity is all supplied by whale oil.
So bloody hands. Anyway, right back to the movie
Jesus. Final pun If you use explosives
to to euthanize the whale, you could put on your best Ahab
voice and say there he blows. Fuck me fucking whale podcast.
Oh Jesus Christ, go to bed. Well, I'll be back anyway,
right? Well, I'll be fucked.
In in Miami Vice. In Miami Vice, OK, we're in a
court case. We're in a bond hearing for this
guy Leon, and the power goes out.
OK, This is important, Sonia, the power goes.
Out No. Sense it's important the power
goes out and it goes completely dark.
And because it's Florida, everybody tools up a weapon.
And then when the lights cut and then when the lights come back
on again, everybody, including the sonographer, the judge, all
of the bailiffs, all the lawyers are all putting a gun at this
Leon guy. It's funny as fuck.
It's so fucking good. The judge has got this
ridiculous fucking short barreled pistol RIP pump action.
It's incredible and they're all really fucking sweaty.
It's as if air conditioning doesn't exist in Miami at this
point. It's fucking wonderful.
Well, it doesn't if the power goes out.
You just immediately start sweating.
You just like immediately start to cook in your own juices.
OK so they released Leon on his own recognisance for his
cooperation with this, the DAA Rouge designed to make Leon beg
for protective custody knowing that colour on will kill him for
cooperating with anyone in law enforcement.
Sure enough Leon soon calls and says OCP but it's it's Rodriguez
and tells Crockett to meet him at the beach.
And then we get another grey needle drop.
Girls just want to have fun. Yeah.
The players, while Leon kind of very anxious, is like looking
around where the beach get lots of shots of like people's butts
and and like the beach and people like there's a big hole
montage of people playing volleyball and like Tubs is like
off his own back, like do a stake out and found the guys.
We cut the tubs. He's just sitting at the table.
And then like Crockett arrives, who isn't with tubs at this
point and just looking around and he finds him and it's all
like into cut. Girls just want to have fun.
And then we see like from like the feet up, like somebody in
ladies clothing, but it's not a lady.
And they walk up to Leon and then they pull a gun and it cuts
away. And then we we catch up with
Crockett, who finds tubs. He's like, what are you doing
here? And he's like, there's a
stakeout man. Like, what are you doing here?
He's like, you got off in protective custody, isn't it?
It's police work. I'll tell you about it sometime.
And they team up and they they look for Leon.
And then they find Leon stood against like a shack, Like, I'll
do a bar thing. And then they and you're like,
hey, Leon. They like Pat's on the shoulder
and his body falls over. And then he rolls down some
stairs onto the beach. He's got this like little blood
stain, like under his like left armpit because he's been like
shot through the ribs into the heart.
It's all pretty fucking cool. It's.
Prostrous and he came and kills me.
The two cops and speak to them inferior that their only leaders
got killed. Crockett reluctantly agrees to a
temporary working arrangement with Tubs.
I love how after after he's killed and the police are there,
there's obviously a scene to be worked.
There's still tonnes of just babes in bikinis hanging around
like literally 2 feet away from the dead body just looking at it
and and the yeah, what can you do man?
It's Miami. You know, you can't, you can't
throw a dead body in this town without what, landing next to
three pretty girls in bikinis. So totally bother trying to
control scenes or anything. Let them hang out, let them hang
out, let them go body board and using the corpse of the one man,
It's it's, it's you. Saw me man the guy.
Five more times before the end of the shift, right?
So why? Why fucking bother?
Why bother you? It's Miami.
Everyone's on cocaine. The seagulls run cocaine.
The Dolphins run cocaine. The wheels on cocaine.
Forget it, Jack. It's Miami.
It's just Miami. That's all.
You know that London eels are on cocaine.
I didn't know that. I say, yeah, that's that's what
that's one of those good memes. Whereas like you see the
newspaper thing that says like Linda Neil's or on cocaine.
It's like not now wheels. This is the last thing we need.
So, you know, Brexit has happened.
Oh my God. I suppose you like fucking
fucking all this while. There's like a subplot when
there's like an officer from the Metropolitan.
It was also undercover in Miami. But but he's an eel.
He's just, he's just like Cockney fucking these.
Catchers is like, well, I'll be jellied.
Who's this? Who's this British guy bustling
in on a turf? Elvis Presley.
Scotland Yard I have some questions on the cocaine could.
You elaborate. So that's the end of the first
episode, the first part of the Super.
The next one starts with a just kind of carries on.
Crockett and Tubbs go to Leon's apartment.
Yeah, bluffing the way inside with an out of date, unrelated
warrant. Crooked police work.
It's not even it's like some kind of like totally unrelated
document as well. Like like I'm sure some dialogue
saying that it's like literally not an actual warrant.
They just, they're just bullshitting the way through.
It's brilliant. Yeah, yeah.
Which this is funny. That flies in the face of like
something that like Crockett says in like about 20 minutes
time when he's like, I might seem like I'm a cool have a look
at guy. But when it comes to the police
work and the straight deal, man, it's like apart from when you're
like breaking the law to get access to property, jeopardising
entire cases through through fucking inadmissible evidence.
But OK. So they find the first
ransacked. However, Tubbs does find an
address book, telephone numbers which they take back to work and
do back traces. Tubbs points out that Leon was
incredibly careful heading to meet where he was killed and the
because he said he like he changed taxis like 3 times and
he was only person to tell him. Meaning the leak in the
department must have told the hitman where Leon was to crooked
chagrin. Tubbs mentions that he
discovered Rodriguez has recently made a large deposit
into his bank account. There's a whole bit here where,
like Tubbs is like, your department's going to leak the
size of the East River just to remind us, just to remind us
all, he came from New York. Yeah, at one point, like you see
him slowly putting on like, like like a New York Yankees cap and
look like I'm going yeah, yeah, New York.
That's actually a lie, son. He doesn't do that.
Something I love about like the search for the apartment is that
obviously the the scene that the doors been forced.
So they go kills, go in, bust in, and then immediately
Crockett course into his fridge, steals a beer, starts drinking
this dead man's kind of course fucking lights up a cigarette
and it's like, you really are bad at this police work thing.
That's right. And this is the bit where Tubbs
kind of realises you, Crockett is this is incredible.
So Tubbs, you like half Jamaican, half Puerto Rican,
raised in New York, goes on. You the Sonny Crockett who
played for Florida State University like several years
ago. What do you think triggered that
particular memory? Didn't you Like, do you think
like got sponsored by Q us or some are always like, hey, I'm
here existing. Hey, I'm Sonny Crockett.
I'm sponsored by smoking darts in a dead man's house and
drinking his beer. He says like, eh, he says like,
this is like a forward pass in the fourth quarter kind of
situation in football terms. And he's like, ah.
Touch pass. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
He's like, ah, you that Sonny Crockett.
He played football. Yeah, like whatever happened to
you? So yeah, I got a fucking trick.
Me obviously, like, no, I'm still a pro baller.
What do you think? Like, brilliant.
Great. So that's, that's happens.
And then, yeah, they talk about how Rodriguez has made a massive
deposit in his bank account. So Crockett's like, shit, Gina,
can you do a check on Tubs and see what comes up?
Gina's the colleague that he wants to Mack on with but but
she is currently resisting his extremely divorce energy.
I like how this all very long. I like how this all very 80s
because these two women who the show at least give us the
dignity of being detectives and not like the girls from the
typing pool or like a volunteer or something or essentially
being told to do his like fucking telephone kind of admin
or like go through notes and shit.
And it's like, come on, man. But it's the 80s.
You know the past was doing its best.
At least they give them like individual names they don't like
They don't, yeah, they don't give them like like 1 funny
combined name like Pepsi and shit.
Not Pepsi and shit because they actually were real people.
But like it's Pepsi and Coke or it's like, you know, candy and
floss. Crate barrel crate and Battery
barrel. Bosch mentioned Bosch.
Mentioned Yes, it's taken us taking us more than an hour to
mention Bosch. We've missed a bit there.
So when they when they meet Trina de Soto, we have this
whole meeting with this character, Trina de Soto.
Sonia is turns out to be the guy, the cross dressing hitman.
The actor would play this one character, but then they loved
working with them so much they would bring him back to play
recurring a different character who's got the exact same vibe.
Very, very funny. They have this like dinner and
like a cafe in the middle of the day and he's spitting a day
about how like, so like when some people were in prison, they
like watch the TV shows and they'd be like the new shows
they're talking about. But he's like, not me though.
I knew I'm going to be here for a long time.
I'm going to expand my mind. So then Tops is like, oh, so
like, do you read a lot of books?
He's like, no, you're not getting me.
I watched a lot of classic TV shows.
I love other Lucy. It's.
Fucking brilliant. It's amazing.
I'm so glad you mentioned him. Because Charles, Charles, he's
in charge. I am so glad you mentioned him,
because if you didn't, I was going to fucking force in the
conversation how he just has this whole great angle that he's
like, I was in prison learning the forbidden knowledge, the the
deep, the deep learnings, you know, the real crazy Gnosticism.
They're like for something like wow, he's like I Love Lucy, You
know, it's, it's like, fuck. It is only the family and it's
like, and then he goes and that's how I speak English.
So good. And that bit, it probably hasn't
eased very well, but but yeah. But I will say this about Miami
Vice though. It like there is a lot of Latin
and African American representation in the show,
generally speaking. And like, so then we cut to the
nightclub. At the nightclub, Crockett and
Tubs enjoy a night of partying with Gina and Trudy while a band
plays all night long. Brilliant all night.
During which time Tesoro shows up and it introduces Tubs to
Calderone. And I've got to say like that, I
can't not. Tubs reluctantly shakes his
hand. There's obviously a moment here.
A lot of intense gazes into Philip Michael Thomas's eyes.
Because colour is the guy responsible for the death of his
own brother, right? So it's a revenge plot and.
We're getting these like flashbacks on with like his
brother again fucking gunned down in the street and then
we'll see Tubs little nails crane run as he takes off with
that because he does. I am really sorry.
The guy has some good physicality about him.
I do believe him as a fighter, as a gunfighter, as a as a
dancer especially. But he runs like David Hyde
Pierce. Wow.
What about Tubs leaves with Trudy and we don't know what
happened? I don't know if we ever find out
what happened between Tubs and Trudy that night.
Well. The cameras, I suggest to me
that they did indeed Make Love that night.
Yeah, I I think the same. Thing and like the next morning
he's like full of beans, isn't he like he's he like cat calls
that woman in a bizarre kind of ways.
He's walking to the boat, you know.
Oh. That's purely fucked up.
Yeah. OK, so we're, we're going to
come to that in like a minute because we, I want to hit the
Gina stuff. This.
So there's one plot point Gina tells Crockett.
He's not Raphael, by the way. Like Raphael Tubbs died 3 weeks
ago. And obviously we've just talked
about it. So we've kind of spoiled already
for you, Sonia, but he is. Here's Rafael Tubs, his brother
Ricardo Tubs, but nobody knows that yet.
And then we go back to the Saint Vita's dance, and that is the
houseboat. It's just a boat boat.
Yeah, any boat you fucking squatting in can be a houseboat.
Like, I mean, if you're if you find a rotten fucking lifeboat
washed up on the shore, flip it over and sleep under it.
Houseboat, baby, come to my place.
But it's a houseboat. Good enough for shackles.
And for me, it's back on the boat and he's he's super
divorced. He's grumping out about about
the deception. I can't believe I fell for that
Tubs guy. Oh my God, You're telling me
he's not called Rafael? Oh my God.
And she knows I was. Going to have sex with them.
Yeah, yeah. And then Gina's like, why don't
you? Why you calm fuck down.
And then they have a passionate night of lovemaking.
And we don't see how it ends, but we hear about it later
because he kind of said the whole thing about like, like if
you love the ex-wife so much, like I can see it on you, you
might all hang on. Gina has an incredible line of
dialogue here actually, that I need to repeat with the words
because it's. Actually absolutely love this
line. Absolutely sublime, she says.
You could play that beach bum cowboy routine with the football
lingo and the beer commercial mentality from now so the
Doomsday, but I don't believe it.
Wow, let's just say that again. Nice and slow.
You can play that beach bum cowboy routine with the football
lingo and beer commercial mentality from now until
Doomsday, but I don't believe it.
And there's two beer commercials I'm thinking of either.
It's survey exactly style. Or it's or it's or it's the
frog's bird. Why, Sir?
But I don't know which beer commercial mentality he's got,
but he's got one of them. I'll tell you one thing, the
scene when he's in the guy's apartment, he gets that kind of
beer out his fridge and cracks it open.
He could have like, at that point he could have looked at
the camera and gone cool as the banquet beer.
It's a beer good enough to die for.
It's a beer good enough to kill for.
Hell yeah, brother, get in the boat.
Next morning Crockett is hanging out in his hoop and he's got
shit hair and then Tubbs happily slips on board going and some
Tubbs reporting for Julie Sir and then he's like, I'm actually
not in the fucking mood for this.
Yeah, yeah. Let's let's let's let's have a
little fucking chat. Fucking Rafael Tubbs is this.
And he's like, look, I never lied to you about who I am.
Like you can see the picture, I guess a different black guy.
In fact, if anything, Crockett, it's a little bit racist of you
to assume that I I was saying I was Rafael Tubbs.
Well, I said it was my name was Tubbs and I'm from New York.
Yeah. And now this whole argue about
how, like his little is express permission to come to Miami was
forged and all this kind of stuff.
And they have a big like argument in the inside the boat.
And this is when, like Crockett is all like, I might play it
rough on the streets, but when it comes to the law, I'm down
the line. But you know what?
It's fucking. It was like, all those big lies.
Yeah, Ridiculous. And we found out that he's not
our fellow Tubs, but Ricardo Tubs.
And he's here to avenge his brother.
And like, again, you know, your boy Crockett is like, I'm not
about revenge. That's that's when the wrong
people get killed. And I'm like, OK, first of all,
Crockett, you're a policeman. So like anyone getting killed as
a loss, like it's not your job to kill people.
You're not a street judge. Position of cocaine five years
in an ISO cube. Like you are you are meant to be
blowing people away like that just happens to be like a perk
that you enjoy cricket. But then their their
confrontation is interrupted by uh, DeSoto in terms answers the
phone in like full Jamaican so. Ridiculous.
That's metal. You see, This was why, say
Sonia, if you had watched the German dub of Brothers Keeper, I
really wanted to know how like a German voice actor don't work
one kind of thing, you know, But obviously that was not to be
because you watched the German dub of the 2006 film.
How was this holding up to the film that you watched, Sonia?
Would you have rather watch this one?
That's the question. Yes, I'll.
Tell you what the silo reminds me of all this is.
Have you guys seen the was Anderson film Rushmore?
No, sorry. No, man, I say.
It's one of my favourite films of all time.
I'm surprised we haven't sat down to watch this film.
So it's about a, a kid at like a like a middle school, high
school kind of situation, like a really fancy prep school that he
got into on a scholarship because he wrote a one act to
play about the Watergate scandal as a four year old.
You have told me yes. So he's meant to be like a
child's prodigy, but he's actually like one of the worst
students we've got because academically he doesn't give a
fuck. And he just gets involved in
like zillions and zillions of like extracurricular activities
like beekeeping, like go Kart racing, like kite flying,
fucking like skeet shooting, like like anything you can think
of. Like he makes like a newspaper
for the school, all this kind of stuff.
But he's he's real passionate, like writing plays and he puts
on a school drama production of Serpico and it's and it's so
good because it's some of the dialogue from it is actually
from the movie Serpico. But like the setup of it.
They're like on a stakeout with a bunch of cops, like in a room.
And like one of his his best friend is this little kid called
Dirk Calloway, who's like fewer grades lower than him.
He's much shorter and he's a little blonde kid and he's
dressed like a nun for like no reason.
It's not addressed like why his dress is a nun.
And he's like sat in the corner with like a headset on like list
like listening to like some kind of listening device that's like
in the house across the street kind of thing.
Meanwhile, like Serpico's having his like argument with his
superior, which if you've seen the movie said ago, he spends
about 8% of the film arguments superior about how he doesn't
want to be, he doesn't want to be a rat and he doesn't want to
tell anybody. And he doesn't want to like
testify an open court. He'll get killed.
And he's like, if I'm going to do this, I'm not going to
testify an open court. You got to you got to give me
one thing. He's like Nevis.
It's like, we've got to see this thing through to the end of a
line. He's like, so help me God.
And then dirt colorways and then pops up and goes like, like the
sound across the street. It's a snowman.
He's getting off the L train. And like a bunch of cops stood
at the window, all pistols going.
He's getting off the L train just like kills a guy.
Death squad behaviour right there.
It's so funny and then like because they're like backstage
and he's like, you forgot about the cannoli line.
You better say the old man likes his cannoli.
He's like, I fucked up the line. I'm sorry, man, but like it
doesn't matter. It's like don't say it doesn't
matter. Every line matters.
And you're like punches in the face.
He's like don't fuck with my play.
Fuck. It's like so funny because these
are like these are like 14 years.
It's so good. It's so good.
That sounds like a young Jason Schwartz when he was like
Safeguard 15. The end of the movie has a play
where it's like set in Vietnam and it's, and like there's like
some safety goggles and some ear defenders under your seats.
Please feel free to use them. And like, it just starts with
black explosions and like fucking like jets flying over
all this kind of stuff. And it's like all this pure,
like everyone's like covered in like, like camera paints and
like all in the uniforms and stuff.
And there's one guy inexplicably holding a surfboard and there's
like a Vietcong. There's like a Vietcong female
soldier who's like a sniper who's like in love with the main
character who's played by Max Fisher.
And there's like, and she's like, tell me something,
Esposito, like, well, I see you on the other side.
It's like, you bet your ass you will like all this kind of
stuff. It's fucking incredible.
Anyway, back to Miami Vice. Gina kind of just announces
casually. Oh, I figure out who the legal
department is. By the way, It's it's a Wheeler
from the DEA. So that that plot point just
gets dropped. Like don't it's happened.
And the next thing we cut to is literally like like Crockett
outside of Wheelers house. So Crockett knocks on the door.
He goes inside the family love Crockett, obviously because he's
fucking cool as fuck. And they're like, are you
staying here? You have had some want some
spaghetti? And he's like talking to the
kids like uncle Uncle Sonny's here, all that kind of stuff.
And he's like, and he's like, and he's just such some evidence
and shows we are like his much payouts that you've taken.
So like, what the fuck, bro? And they have, they have a
composition in his car outside where he basically explains that
like the mounting medical bills, it's actually a bit of a cynical
takedown of the American health industry, which which is great.
So yeah, yeah. Goes into the whole thing about
how the medical bills for the Scotty Junior are like through
the roof and he needs the extra money.
They keep dipping into the well of the undercover guy who's been
undercover for too long and it's doesn't know who he is anymore.
In fact, we had it earlier when Gina's on the boat with with
Crockett and she's like, do you ever sometimes forget who you
are? And he's like Gina.
I sometimes remember who I am. He remembers who was, that's for
sure, when he fucking rolled over in the morning and called
out by a name. Yes, I've skipped a bit.
Yeah, that's right. So so he has that delivered some
like proper like expedition there as well as like I remember
who I am sometimes. I got a six year old kid called
Billy. OK, whoa.
Just lest me forget, for anyone who didn't watch the first part.
Two years. Yeah.
And then there's a whole thing back at the police station,
whether like, the setting up the deal for the night and
everything and like, and he follows her into like, the
toilets. And they have the argument about
like, what? Because she's like, proper
pissed at him. And she's like, what's going on?
Like, it's like, oh, you had to take advantage of me.
Had a few drinks, we had a few laughs, the wine.
We had passionate lovemaking. And then you whispered your ex
wife's name to me in the morning and he's like, I'm so sorry,
Gina. It's just that I'm so divorced.
I'm just so divorced. And and you know, that sex was
so like divorced and self hitting that night, right?
I mean, even when like it cuts like the shot of him in the
morning after, there's like a big box of fucking Lucky Strikes
and it's like 1/2 empty bottle of bourbon.
Like like fucking in front of the camera pretty much.
And say that was a miserable night of self hitting fucking
sex. But he's tried his best not to
ask her to do the things that he liked his ex-wife to do, you
know? Grim, grim.
It's bad for her as well. Like she, she must have been
looking around, going like, what have I allowed myself to get
into? Here I mean like, I mean, I
mean, I mean the whole boat smells the fucking alligator for
a start, so. Yeah, Grim.
I like how you know who else had Who else had sex in a boat?
Bruce Willis. Bruce Willis in striking
distance. Right, he did.
He did. He did.
And that was also a bit grim and self hating.
So he's had this confrontation with Wheeler.
He starts like fucking trying to bang him out and he has to get
pulled off him. He's.
Talking about Simpson chokes. Bot Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's just.
Not a shocking level of violence.
And choke like that doesn't seem shocking.
Violence now because of The Simpsons ruined it.
So when they when they talk about ranging the meat later, I
don't know if you caught this little detail, but at some point
during his busy day goes up and buys a single red rose.
It leaves it in Gino's locker for him.
That's a move that he has done before.
I guarantee you like, oh, you finally got a rose from from
Crockett, did you? We've all got one.
Who here hasn't had a rose from Crockett yet?
Like Tubs is the only put he's. He's he's got a florist on speed
dial and he uses those like fucking police, like comms
codes, those like police pro words and stuff.
Just let him know what's up. It's like it's like rim go hey,
it's a hey, it's a Crockett. I got a signal 7 or something
like that. Oh, I got AI got a 18.
I've got a 10/23 and there was like shit, he's just done
something fucked up with a woman again.
Just got 5 red roses in case it was a group situation this time.
He's got like he's got like different codes for like when
he's respectable, the woman or or he's got a special code for
when he's fucked up with somebody at work.
He started 10/23. What's a 10/23?
It's a shot on his own doorstep. He's that's a dozen red roses,
right. So from him choking out Wheeler,
it cuts abruptly and immediately to the coolest fucking sequence
ever, which is the iconic in the air tonight scene.
What a scene you have probably if you're online video at all.
This is the one bit of mommy advice you will have seen if
you've not seen any other bit of mommy's you.
Will have seen this on YouTube Shorts Sonia I'm sure.
You must have done It's it's Crockett and Tubs driving to the
meat. They're driving in silence.
They're not talking to each other in this black sports car
he's got. And the wind is like blooming
through his hair. You don't hear any wind.
You don't hear any engine noise. All you hear is like the vaguely
sound of Phil Collins in the air tonight with it's like that
little really slow tempo drum drum machine intro like, you
know, awesome. And like most of the song plays
intercut with like close up shots of like the Chrome, the
wheel view from the hood of the car, like the view front of like
from the rearview mirror, the back of the.
Yeah, like the roads peeling away under the cars.
It's buried along in the night with like the street lights
going over. Very evocative, very
atmospheric. And like you get, yeah, big
collateral energy actually, Yeah, yeah, definitely.
And also shots that David Lynch would love to do, like Lost
Highway and like bits of Twin Peaks to return and bits of
Mahollan Drive all look about like this flash, like headlights
on a, on a dark Rd as like one of those recurring visual
images. He's always hot anyway.
So we get all that and we get like Crockett's only line of
dialogue initially is like, like long till the meet and it's like
25 minutes. And then they pull over into
like a outside of like a waterfront French Bistro with a
phone box. And there's like a yacht in the
picture. It's actually the picture I've
got behind me. And and and Sonny Crockett gets
out of the car, goes into this little phone box and rings his
ex-wife, Caroline. And she's like, hey, Caroline,
It's sunny. She's like sunny.
Is everything OK? He's like, yeah, he lied.
And he's like, but I got to know something, Caroline, the way we
were not lately, but before it was real, wasn't it?
And she's like, you bet it was. You bet it was sunny.
And like hangs to the phone. And then he walks back to the
car like turns over the car. The car drives out of frame just
as the car drives out of frame goes awesome.
And that that goes on for another like minute or so.
And it's incredible. And it's so otherworldly because
there's so little dialogue and the image is so fluid.
And you have that weird little bit in the middle.
And like you honestly, you don't have been watching it for like a
minute, 2 minutes, 3 1/2 minutes.
It just goes on and it's awesome.
So good. And then they get to the meet,
man. And then they eventually arrive
at the meet, which is like done by the docks.
And there's a like a short exchange of gunfire, which I'm
sure you'll talk about in, of course.
And at the docks fights. Cops get in the drop on Calder
rooms, men, They shoot down the thugs.
Tubs gets hit in the arm, apparently.
And then after narrowly on nearly escaping during the
shootout, Calderon finds himself stoned down the barrels of Tubs
sawed off shotgun. And Tubs is incredibly tempted.
And Calderon's like egging him on.
He's like, what you do, cop, you're going to shoot me, You
can't shoot me. It's against the law.
And like, Tubs doesn't even say anything.
And he's like on the edge. And he's like thinking about
each brother. And it's like flashing back and
then like crocods behind him and he's like not like this, not
like this, tops. And then the arrest Calderon and
he's taken out of custody and you think brilliant, cool,
that's not done. And then they then they what
they're trying to do is they're trying to stop it like a judge
gang up to like the gaol, A corrupt judge and then letting
him out on bail. So they try to move him to like
some like random little gaol in the suburbs and keep moving
around all night so that no one can get like a beat on where he
is. But just their luck.
As soon as they get there, he's already been taken out of the
gaol so that they try and pursue and their car and they they get
there just in time to see Caleroon flee the country in a
seaplane. And like, he's like, oh, I'm
sorry, we'll get him next time. He'll be back.
New name, new people. They always come back.
It's the Sunshine State. And then they drive away
dejected. And then and then Crockett says,
the Tubs. You ever considered a career in
Southern law enforcement? And then and then Tubs goes
maybe, maybe that's it. That's the end.
That's the end of the first episode of Miami Vice.
Fucking wild. A little bit let down by that
end exchange. Maybe, maybe obviously like
immediately after this ATV spot would have played in like next
week. Miami Vice.
Ed O'Neill hangs himself like. But yeah, yeah, absolutely
incredible. I obviously love it.
I think, Rory, you must love it. I thought, I don't know what
we're going to talk about here, Sum it up.
What was your What was your feeling watching this?
I thought it was great, man. The show was a fucking vibe.
And when I say it's a vibe, I mean the show is literally, it's
an era that doesn't exist, can't exist, maybe never fully
existed, but it is like a portal in there in the some fantastical
time. It's cool as fuck.
It's hard to talk about it like dig deep in without over
intellectualising the fact that this show just fucks like they
show rules man. They show it does loads of
cocaine and still makes it'll work the next day.
This this this show is mint basically.
That's very very good. It's.
Cool. It's absolutely phenomenal.
I think it watching it now, yeah, still like there's
elements of it that look obviously dated because of the
style of the clothes and and the music a little bit.
But actually watching it, the cinematic look at it still looks
like clean and fresh and there's like the stylistic touches I
think are still really great. I think the editing still really
great. I think I think like the the use
of like splits up to shops and depth of deals and stuff is
really, really cinematic in a way that I got to get a lot of
modern television struggles with and tries to employ the same
stool sort of thing, pulls it off.
The way that Miami advice is it's tactile.
Obviously you can see the money is all on the screen I think and
they managed to find like colour at a time.
You gotta remember like in the in the 80s, like mommy advice is
like, Lord is this example of what the 80s is like, but it's
not. No, no, it's really not.
Many respects. You also remember the 80s and
the early 90s. Yeah.
Growing up in the northeast of England, it was a lot of brown.
It was not a brown. And a lot of olive green and a
lot of orange. Even even if they can parent
contrast like American TV shows of the day of things like Hill
Street Blues, NYPD Blue, that kind of thing.
You know, cop shows at the time didn't look like that.
They didn't like paint with the same kind of palette.
It's vibrant, it's alive, it's lived in.
Even like the more like downtrodden parts, downrodden
looking parts of the Shore, like the detective's office.
I love how it looks at a working office.
And it's fucking weird as well. That one scene when the guy in
the background takes his shoes off and puts his feet in a
bucket. Yeah.
The way they used sets, where they used locations it's lived
in at state. You unhinged at times.
It's Florida's fucking strange man.
I mean obviously we all know the whole Florida man meme, please
laugh et cetera. But ensures Florida is being
weird and off killer and unhinged at times without the
show being about how crazy Florida is.
The show is about drugs and cool cops and cool bad guys and babes
and cool boots and it's everything like a 12 year old
and a 43 year old were both a high 5 of angolic.
Yeah, buddy, good job. It really is.
It speaks to it speaks to like the lizard brain.
It speaks to a closed off part of your fucking Dome.
There's just like, this is so cool.
This is so cool. This is so cool, man.
This is rad, you know. Yeah, big time.
Yeah, big time. I think it's it's something
great about this kind of show and that it has a bit of a loose
continuity and it goes through like a little phase of doing
different stuff. Like so we we get the end of the
Calderon story comes in like 4 episodes time where toast
finally gets his man kind of stuff and puts out to bed.
But there's like the horse is all bit in like is it the fourth
season where like Crockett gets like amnesia and then he starts
to believe that he truly is like Sunny Burnett, his is drug
dealing alter ego. Great, Absolutely wild.
We've talked already about like we've talked already about like
all the all the cameos that have been in, like, feel like Phil
Collins would turn. On was it.
Like, yeah, that comes at Bruce. Bruce Willis is like a wife
beaten fucking like arms dealer or something in it like Lewis
Helena bomb. Carter's can listen it just like
it's mental. Just so, so wild.
And it just Pam Grier is in it. Absolutely.
Well, Pam Grier I think plays like one of oh, it's the one
where they go back to New York and Tubs hooked up his old flame
and his old flame is Pam fucking.
I need to watch this episode because I fucking love Pam
Grier. I think she's badass.
I think she's incredible. Yeah, yeah, big time.
So like it's, it's brilliant. I think it's, it's in a way, in
a way it's very much of its time, but in a different kind of
way. It's almost timeless aged, I
think. I think really well.
There's something about the aesthetics of Miami that don't
age because you've got this art gecko sea front that's already
aged by the time the films by the films being shot.
And this is like juxtaposed with people driving state-of-the-art
modern speed boats, performance cars.
It's like that. I am over intellectualising this
fucking rad film, but it's like Miami in this film feels all
that worldly at times and a lot of like a lot like depictions of
it. Eve even down to Vice City from
Kidman. It seems all that worldly
because you've got this same clash between this old
architecture and the vibrant fucking youth and just present
fucking Venus of of how the stories are told, how things
unfold, the images you see. Yeah, I don't think you're
vitalizing. It's all.
I think that's exactly what they're after.
I think. I think they wanted to play make
this place has to go weird fantasy playground, but is on
the turn of a dime, like, also a complete nightmare.
Like, what do they describe that as?
A Miami where there are more ex lovers than there are lovers?
I love that phrase. Yeah, it really is.
Yeah. You've got this kind of sort of
CD dark underbelly that's just like fully exposed.
Yeah. It's a bit like Dubai, isn't it?
In that, in that sense, like it's just like a place where
it's like brazen about how superficial and on the surface
it is. It's a place that's not a phrase
to show off that like, hey, this place is all about drugs and
sex, by the way, you want to come here and party?
This. This is the place to come real
close to Cuba, maybe. It has very few pretensions.
Yeah, yeah, big time. Cool.
Should we do some categories? Yeah.
Through all the categories and we're all sort of casting and I
like to throw in a little bit about directors and
cinematographers and shit as well because, well, the crew but
casting so directed by Thomas Carter, who is known for
directing coach Carter possible nepotismalist 5 episodes equal
justice and save the last dance the I'm I'm rich, you're poor,
but we'll dance together. Society won't like it.
I don't care film. He also did an episode of Bosch.
Bosch mentioned Bosch. Mentioned I didn't know that,
which season, you know which one it was.
Season 1, Episode 10. Amazing season 1's a good
season. So this guy's a lot of like
single shots as a director for different TV shows.
I think his direction is really cool.
I think there's some, I think there's some very, very artful
parts of this show. And I love that he's still
working because I do like to see people racking up really storied
careers. Yeah, that's brilliant.
You mentioned Anthony Yerkovich before the the creator of and
writer of and the show former right after Starsky and Hutch.
She did a couple of episodes of that.
He did an episode of fantasy Island.
He's a big run 38 episodes of Hill Street Blues, 11 episodes
were sure called Private Eye, which sounds interesting.
So it's got Josh Brolin in it and there's and there's like sat
in like the 19 fees, which is sounds kind of fucking cool.
Oh, no, hang on. I have heard of this.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. This is like a contemporary of
my advice. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
yeah, yeah. This is like one of the episode
1 of the shows I was accused of stealing money versus vibe.
That was written by Anthony Yerkovich.
That's pretty fucking fair. Yeah, basically.
So yeah, he just became huge off the back of this and that this
they show was apex of his career.
And you know what, what a good thing to have as your apex.
The cast, Don Johnson, I've got written here certified cool
motherfucker. And he is, I often bound around
the phrase coolest motherfucker in the world, and he's not that,
but he is incredibly cool. He's a cool, cool dude.
Currently filming a film called Score.
A college football coach breaks all the rules to get a winning
team because he's football maxing and in production of he's
in production of a film called Encore as well.
This sounds incredibly silly. Former Broadway icons are new
residents of a retirement home where they discover a community
of forgotten talents. The group of retired actors
attempt to reignite their passion for life.
Make us suggest you open up IMDb and look at the cast for this,
because it's fucking excellent. A sailor.
Look, it's in pre production. Glenn Close.
Yeah. Henry Winkler, Jeremy Irons?
Yeah, wow. What a cast.
That's it, That's that's it. It's the four.
Looking amazing. It's brilliant.
That's great. That's wonderful.
It sounds like a joke from That was sort of Bojack Horseman,
just that that cast, doesn't it? It's like Princess Carolyn's
trying to get Bojack attached to it.
Looking back in Don Johnson's career, he's he's one of these
actors whose first role that appears an IMDb is like the lead
in a movie and he was in a film called The Magic Garden of
Stanley Sweetheart made in 1970 based on a semi autobiographical
novel by Robert T Westbrook. The movie is about 23 year old
Columbia University dropout Stanley Sweetheart who seeks his
identity during the sexual revolution.
John Johnson at this point in his career has done a wedge of
TV pilots that had not been taken up.
So the executives were like, if you cast on Johnson this, it's
like bad juju. He's like a Jonah.
They will not get the show Maze. Nevertheless, you got the you
got the role. And then you start early in the
sort of production doing a bit of like a, by his own admission,
riffing off of Nick Nolte a little bit in 48 hours and
eventually like that to the executives that fly across the
country to like to go to filming and be like, Don, look, I'm
brown you buddy, like we're not really sure about what you're
doing at the minute. It's a little bit like Nicole,
you could just try and like find your own voice kind of thing.
And he did and and that was it. The rest is history.
That's kind of the deal on that. Another thing we mentioned, I've
mentioned on a previous poll was you had a very second weird
relationship with Melanie Griffith.
Don't touch about that again. But she was too young for them
to get married. I'm just saying that fucked up.
But can we talk now? We've got Dunn Johnson for a bit
of time here. Have you seen one of the
greatest post apocalyptic films ever made?
A Boy and His Dog? I have not.
It is incredible. I watched it probably about 10
years ago. I probably longer than that
actually. Yeah, definitely longer than
like 15 probably. It's basically about kid because
he's only young in it, he's only like 17 and kid like wandering
around like a post apocalyptic wasteland in the US with a dog
and the dog and he talk telepathically, right?
So, so he can have a conversation with the dog in his
in his mind and him, his dog are like best pals and stuff
happens. It's a little bit like the
cursed if in like in 2018, that's the kind of vibe of the
of the of the world, right. And then it ends by like the
sort of half of the film is him going into like what's
essentially a fucking Fallout vault, as in like from the
property Fallout. It's like that kind of vibe
before Fallout existed. So, you know, Black Isle
obviously like nicked this idea, not not being funny.
And when they get in the right, and I say that because when they
get in there, it is like a Fallout vault in the sense it's
like, there's like like a fake farmland with like fake sky
painted on the walls and like hair bills and stuff.
And then when they go in there, the culture is like super 1950s
vibe. And it's all like, you know,
it's all like guys in Letterman jackets.
It's a bunch of girls dressed as like for concealers and stuff.
And the most fucked up that is they like because they want to
restart the human race. And he's the only guy they've
met. They're like who came up to this
machine that like milks him and they're going to like and
they're going to like milk him to death.
And then the dog like rescues him and and like, I haven't seen
it in so long and I need to watch it again.
But like, that's basically about his dog.
And I would be happy to cover this film for the broadcast is
to plug in that there's 100% got to be one of the inspirations
for Fallout. I don't care what they say 100%
definitely is. I mean like weird weird vault
full of weird people doing weird science stuff.
Save 7 year from a fucking execution by jerk off machine is
100% good boy behaviour. That dog deserves all this.
Really is and then swing into the swing to the other end I'm.
Going to pull the hog smooth off Thank you dog meat.
That's exactly what happens. It's so bad.
What else is highlights from from his career?
He was really good in the 2019 Watchmen TV series, the David
Lindelof one. Really, really good.
That as like the dodgy white supremacists because it was clan
guy from the police. Really cool, obviously.
Obviously he was in Knives Out. Yeah, he TV maxed in Nash
Bridges. We had a had a role-playing some
some San Francisco constable called Nash Bridges who wasn't
as cool as some problems and I don't think he even had a
fucking boat mounted done. Well, I saw about a TV show
where he did have a boat. What shall I say?
A cruise ship Doctor Odyssey, which is ATV show that my wife
and I watched when it went for its 118 episode season
2024-2025. Fortunately, it's not been
picked up for a second season. It was not that successful, but
he was the captain of of the Odyssey, which is like this
luxury cruise ship and it follows at least this like one
Doctor and one like a nurse practitioner and then like one
nurse who's this English guy called Tristan.
And it's the campus most ridiculous show and it's so
funny. It's so good.
And the guy who's and the and the guy who's the doctor is, is
what's his name from from Dawson's Creek, Joshua Jackson,
who played pacey in Dawson's Creek.
And I'm like the, the nurse practitioner is, is Philippa
Sue, who was in Hamilton. And yeah, it's absolutely
phenomenal. And then the way the shoe would
work is that like every week to be like a different theme for
like the cruise one. We could be like Wellness
influences and then and then want to be like sex toy makers
facing off against tried wives. And then there'll be 1 where
it's like then it'd be like plastic surgery week and
everyone comes on and they're all getting plastic surgery
done. And then there's like 1 where it
was shark week and it's when the ship was getting attacked by
sharks. And there's this whole bit where
like. Absolutely class.
I love that sort of changed. It was an incredible 1 where
they're getting attached by like I think might be tonnes of
whales actually. And to get a reaction from Sonia
managing whales and and on the bridge of the ship, they like
look at this quote unquote soon our feed, which doesn't look a
sooner. It looks like a radar.
And then and there's like big blocks of like these pods of
wheels, like actively moving on the screen.
It's like this isn't how sooner works.
This isn't how anything works. There's a bunch of German
nationalists on ribs. Just chase.
Not for them. Good, get further into the sea
if we can Hope for now. Get you to Denmark.
Not to mention that Sona is really bad for Wales.
Right. So Don Johnson also had a music
career. Yeah, he did and and put some
records out. I've not heard any of them, I
don't think. Have I?
Maybe I have, I'm not sure. But I mentioned that because
Philip Michael Thomas has also attempted big.
Time. Music makes big time, kind of
kind of like 1-1 and done with Phil Michael Thomas, and I don't
really know him from anything else.
He's made some. Crazy decisions.
I've got some interesting casting notes on him as well.
It's just some bits from his wildlife.
He's got 12 kids, you know, for a start.
It's wild. This, this, that's a lot of
kids. This this this man has sex.
He's also in Nash Bridges with. He made he made two appearances
in Nash Bridges I believe, if my notes are correct.
And of course, we know him as Lance Vance.
Vance yeah, Lance Vance and Vice City and Vice City Stories.
And in fact, I think Vice City Stories was like the yeah, the
last work he did was Vice City Stories in 2006 and a man who
coined the acronym EGOT, meaning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.
In reference to his plans for winning all four awards.
He is not, as of February 2026, nominated for any of these
awards, but has received a People's Chugs Award and a
Golden Globe Award nomination. Thanks Wikipedia.
That's an incredible fact that he coined the term he got.
He coined the term he got he had a legal run in with the Psychic
Readers Network in 1994, Thomas saying the agreement with
Psychic Readers Network I known as Traffics Incorporated based
in Melbourne, FL becoming a spokesman for the Philip Michael
Thomas International Psychic Network.
He appeared in television ads and claimed we've met the
planet's premier psychic through his quote world travels.
End Quote. He dressed similarly to his
Miami Vice alter ego, even opening the ads with a phrase
from Miami Vice to world advice exclamation mark.
He appeared in infomercials with Eileen Brennan and Todd McKee
along with his one. In 2002, a New York arbitrator
awarded Thomas $1.48 million for the improper use of his name and
likeness in an additional $780,000 in interest.
This guy, what life he's lived. In an interview with Playboy
magazine, he said I've become greened like money.
I respect the position. I'm enthusiastic as opposed to
excited. Enthusiasm comes from the Greek
entheos, which means God inspired.
I recommend fame, but with fortune.
Otherwise it's a bitch. Wow, it's.
A good His acting role has been very interesting.
Apart from this, he like I said, he was in a show called Direct.
Sorry, he was in a show called Detective Extra Large 1991.
Have you heard of a show called Detective Extra Large?
Because it sounds shockingly made-up.
It sounds like something Tumblr uses with makeup.
Detective Extra Large. There was no space in Extra
Large by the actor's name Masonica Size.
Detective Extra Large sounds like the Tumblr nickname for
him. Poor guy from some show which
just happens to be fat. That really does doesn't look at
him. It's like.
Like it's like Mulock, but for Americans.
It's like. Look at this detective extra
large. Could be could could be like
applied to significant amounts of detectives from American TV
shows. Sipowicz, Crate&barrel, fucking
so many genre. And it just turns into this
weird online reference, just people going this is so
detective extra large coded and no one knows what the fuck
detective extra large even is. Well, you know what, we can
probably make that happen. We can start using that and just
really, he really fucking changed the game.
It appears to be called Extra large now when it's possibly
because it's been syndicated, but extra large.
Original title Detective Extra Large AKA Vai Zuppa Toopen in
Miami Germany mentioned Jack Costello Bud Spencer as a
retired cop and now private attacker for lives in Miami who
handles a myriad of cases for unusual clients at a side our
old please buddy Sam Bosley, Lou Bedford and cartoonist turned
ambushes luth Jean Philippe Dubas Philip Michael Thomas
cartoonist turned Abuja sluth. I fucking love it.
That's the plot of Zulia. That's a fucking basin.
He's using Costello as an influence in his nickname, the
Burly Detective Extra Large. In the second series, Costello
faces other dangerous cases, again with Bosnian Archibald
Michael Winslow, the son of an old Fred.
The Costello usually nicknames Dubas.
This sounds like Tumblr made it up.
This sounds like gonna shower off the TV show.
This sounds like bullshit. We've got to find this fucking
thing, you know, because I think I'm.
Just telling Sonia. Just telling Sonia that he did a
film ATV film with the same guy Because We Are Angels, which is
about him and the big guy being big maximum security inmates in
a prison in Costa Rica who escaped by dressing as Friars
and hide out in a monastery. Incredible.
That's fucking amazing. And then they made of and that's
from 1997 and also released in 1997 was the animated 2D
platform of video game tie in to We are angels.
Yes gaol and defeats Santiana, the strongman of San Ronaldo
Villa you get FMV briefings from.
Also, the game has 6 levels. It's fucking amazing.
So good. What the fuck?
An early TV role he did in 1974. He was in an episode of
Policewoman, the Angie Dickinson cop show.
Play a character called Sonny. So there are connections.
Everything is circular other. I've noticed everything.
It was Ding Ding Ding Ding. Trapper, John, MD.
John Anderson, you trapped me. Fucking hell them Harold
Bergman. I'm putting respect on Judge
Rupp's name because this guy is cool as fuck.
IMDb says he's known for playing at the Reverend in Cocoon.
Dr Irwin in Cocoon. The Return in 1988.
His final rule was Elderly Reverend in Dawson's Creek in
2000. This guy, this Jade, this big
swinging Dick, this humongous motherfucker, this king of big
part players live for the ripe old age of 99 years old.
He didn't even start acting until he was in his 60s and
fucking hell man, what an absolute guy.
He seemed a love playing judges and shit.
As as as first rule was the ordeal of Doctor Mudd.
And yes, it's about the misfortunes of Samuel Mudd after
he harboured John Wilkes Booth. And yes, I want to watch it
because it sounds good. It's focused 2 1/2 hours long
and does weavers in it. Oh, there's a really good true
about that on Netflix. Yeah.
That's worth watching, Yeah. And I think, yeah, we've we've I
have what Lords more casting? But you know what we've got,
we've got we've got to keep moving.
Keep the cigarette book bouncing over the waves.
Just asking questions now, asking questions bit earlier
than usual. Then we'll go back and listen
things and talking about shit and hyper fixations.
But how would this film go down in Germany?
Sanya. Just what would be told for
Assad Which? Which coastal resort was setting
it in where? Sanya is Germany's Miami, Oh.
My God, we don't do that. The Miami of Germany.
Rostock drugs. You can have a bun with fried
fish on it and shut the fuck up. So, so from what I'm getting for
you putting down Sunny is that there's no true analogue to
Miami in the whole of Germany. There isn't 9.
So there isn't 1 seaside city that's got the same kind of swag
and we found off Florida's Florida as a unique place,
right. So the answer is how would this
go down? It wouldn't.
The average temperature on the German coast is like 15° during
those summer days. What do you think?
How many? How many cokes are bikini babes
are you? You're going to.
Get. Depends how strong I know.
Everything on the north and then everything on the northern side
has the issue that half of the time the North Sea isn't even
fucking there. Oh yes, maybe we should do coke
about it. Wow.
German noir version of Miami Vice?
No Lensburg vice. Yeah.
On the Baltic coast, every every every episode.
So some cadets from Marine Shulamovic just fuck it up
somehow and get in trouble. Jesus Christ, I used to think
like what the what the what? The British version would be
like talking vice. Fucking Brighton.
It'll be called Brighton Beach and it would be fucking shitty
episodes. I can see that happening, yeah.
Oh, it's Blackpool, Blackpool voice Blackpool.
Face, but at least be funny because let's be honest,
Blackpool is the Florida of the UK right.
You know, I mean I remember I was in Blackpool years ago.
I'm walking past this shop. I've got a big science in BBE
appears and done here, you know, and it's like yes, Blackpool man
of Florida man right, absolutely.
I was I was I was on a train years ago going down Leeds to go
and say Slayer and me and Frank Pete.
Hi Pete. If you listen to the podcast
here it is was was was start drinking quite early and it's
about 10:00 in the morning and run with train and we've had a
few beers. And then the people on the train
who was in across from us who were kind of cool and young
already get off And an old couple comes on that they look
like they're probably in like the late 70's, the early 80s,
but a bit spry and, you know, come and sit down and me and
Pete, you know, we've just finished drinking some pretty
strong beers. I'm starting to get the shaky
shaky right. And Pete said, Rory, I'm getting
on the fucking wrong man. I'm like, and I don't want to
fall asleep already. So I say this old lady in this
old fella is okay if me, my friend have a couple of beers
and the last goes only if we joined you.
And my hand to God, my hand to Sonny Crockett.
She pulls out two paint cans of Stella to crack them open and we
start shooting the shirt and drinking and it's mint and just
telling us that they used to run a B&B in Blackpool until a
murderer on the run checked into the B&B and was arrested outside
it. When the police caught up with
him and ruined the careers, no one wanted to go to the B&B so
they just jacked it in and retired.
And now the love and the life just being retired did.
I'm drinking I guess, on mass transit.
So yes, Blackpool. Blackpool is.
There's more to that story. Someone wasn't just arrested
outside for B&B and that's why nobody wants to go there one.
100% Blackpool. Blackpool is the Miami of the
Northeast. Yeah, so.
Yeah, so you see, I. Live in a I want to live in a
boat and. Can you imagine your Blackpool
houseboat is like. It's literally just like a canal
boat that somehow ended up on the coast of Blackpool and it's
half. And the Irish Sea and it's.
Like, and it's half up on the beach and it's partly rotten.
And every morning when you get up, you've got like chase off
for like the smack heads of the seagulls because they're all
fighting over the last chips that are on the deck.
But that's fine because you're Blackpool's best vice cop.
You're Blackpool's only vice. Cop what's like an equivalent
animals I have living in it as. Well.
I got Urban Fox. That's my that's my fox.
Urban fox, I would have your urban fox definitely or like if
if they would only fucking reintroduce links as to the UK,
it could be a links they just found when he was out on the
Moors and it's yeah yeah, that is chained up inside his house
mode on a short chain and he keeps it it's.
Got like a TD ridden badger. And he and he keeps it really
angry by playing like Captain Beefheart records to it.
So it's really fucking on edge all the time.
You say I would watch that show. Nobody else.
Would I love that? I love that that rocket has like
a canonically yacht rock taste. And yeah.
Totally. As much like the British
equivalent would be like, so like you've got like the the
British equivalent of tubs is like looking is looking for like
the the cassette collection of the British Crockett and he's
like New Order 3. Pounds fuck me mad he's got.
Like. 3 or 4 albums by Deacon Blue.
Paddy Backaloon. Paddy Backaloon.
Paddy Backaloon. Christopher Records forget to
grab the let's get this shit from It's like is he get this
shit from MVC? Oh my God.
Holy crap. All right, do next category.
Where the hell are we going to put our scraggly friend in this?
How are we going to deploy the man himself, Mr Colombo, Peter
Falk in this film? Sonya, you can just fucking
guess. You can make something up since
you haven't seen the film, he's thinking.
I mean, this sounds bonkers enough to just have him do his
actual job in there, to be honest.
He's just, he's just just a detective who isn't doing
undercover shit. He's just like, what are you
doing? I have one more question about
that. He's he's he's he's just like
bumbled in from LA like he's like also on the case for some
reason. My.
Wife she also likes stimulants, but could she explain this to me
one more time? Just like fucking cook up some
way of the LA PD to be also involved in it somehow.
And it's like, what a what? A trio and tubs in Colombo.
Tubs in Colombo Tubs in Colombo run off and steal the boat and
Crockett just in the back and he's like, just like New York
and he's like la. Yes, Oh my God.
What's up the Beagle? Yes, that's so fucking good,
man. Quotes.
What? Our favourite quotes from the
movie because goddamn, some of these were incredibly,
incredibly good. Like just how Corky is talking.
It's the dialogue rings true with me when he's talking in the
drive to the like meeting and stuff.
He's making this weird comment about like the kind of ethnic
makeup of Miami. And then he starts talking about
you should, you should sponsor a kid or a farmer in Latin
America. I do.
Then there's a beat and there's like a sniff and it's like,
that's just like fucking brilliant.
Oh, there's a bit where Crockett punches tubs because Crockett
makes that whole thing about like when you get having all
your your buddies getting killed by car bombs and you're like
punches in the face for that. And he's and he's like, and he's
like, I'm sorry, man, that was way out of line.
And he's like, oh, you mean it. It's like, yeah, I do.
Yeah. And he's like, can't let you
handle all that bad come about yourself.
It's a so it's so extreme. I've got the.
Perfect quotes from Trina DeSoto.
Here. The actual dialogue.
We caught a tub. You read a lot of books. 3
DeSoto. You're missing my point, man.
I skip all that network drive. Tune into the world classics.
I Love Lucy. Father Knows Best.
Leave it to you, Beaver. Gilligan's Island.
That's why I learned to speak English so good man, the ghoul
of nature of TV and forget about and forget about Desi and as
man, the fact that dude never got the Academy Award says
something very deep about the American psyche and then just
studies response New York critics treaty.
Don't let it throw you. That's actually that is a low
key absolute banger. And there was the you're going
to enjoy your show without cosigning of the things that its
characters say and share in their opinions.
And the scene when Crockett goes to Tubs along lines of did you
just come down to Miami for a tan is like horrific.
And then Tubs responds with the incredibly, I'm not going to the
voice at all, will hush my mouth.
And it's like you're arguing in front of your fucking senior
officer here on the fucking bridge that appears to be an
active railway track and being very, very problematic in front
of your management. Truly, there was a lot of
cocaine going on at this time. The.
GQ comes down here from New York.
I love that bit as well as the GQ comes down here.
Fucking amazing. I've got I've got the Sunny and
Gina conversation from the boats when they.
Just go for. You know something Gina, you
could be a real pain in the butt sometimes, but I like you.
I like you a lot. I like you too, Sonny.
Really. Well, why have you tossed 4 of
my dinner invitations and three weeks back at me?
You wouldn't have come along tonight if you hadn't had.
Truly. Along the block tackle, my
father always told me. Football hole, my father always
told me, Crockett never to get involved with a man on the
rebound. And as far as I'm concerned,
you're bouncing so hard you're practically out of the ballpark.
What's that supposed to mean? You're still in Live with
Caroline. Try again, lady.
ESSEC. What's that supposed you can?
Play that beach bum cowboy routine with the football lingo
and the beer commercial retali. I love how he's like.
What's that supposed to mean, Crockett?
Do you own a mirror? You live on a boat with a large
stolen reptile. You know you steal dead people's
beer. You are.
Incredible isn't cool. Yes, you're about to make it
cool, but it wasn't cool when you first had.
Exactly. You're trying to be divorced.
I like when he's briefing his team and again, this is like
obviously dialogue that I don't cool sign because it's got some
kind of shitty stuff behind it. But it's like when he's given
like a briefing of his team and they're like any questions.
And one guy's like, did you roll a fruit for that shirt?
And it's like, OK, Sunny did. Did you did you rob a gay man
with a generic black T-shirt that you're wearing?
And then his response is essentially a fuck your wife but
in like more like kind of witty. Terms, though, he says.
I got it from your mom and it wasn't even my birthday.
That's right, that's right. A fucking mom.
That's right. And it's like that's, that's
just, that's just great. But these, this, this is so
1980s. These people suck.
Yeah, yeah, there's room for improvement.
Some cultural differences, yeah. OK, weapons free my friends.
I'm going to talk briefly about the guns and this show because I
could go on all night, but I won't.
This is the first. This is the first appearance of
the Sig Sauer P220 in any media at beat movies.
Taylor was the first was the first screen appearance of it
was this TV show. After that, it was shown in a
Japanese film called called Terra Warrior Boy, a 1985
Japanese science fiction film directed by Akidobo Ishiyama.
The screenplay was written by Masato Harada, based on the
novel of the same name by Mike Spring.
In the film follows Momoko and Moto Haru as he discovers she
and her friends have psychic powers after being turned
suddenly into high school students caused by a strange
light in the past 10 years. And for some reason one of
them's got a fucking Sig Sailor P220 his what his this.
This gun was last seen. According to imftb.org, this gun
was last seen on the big or small screen in 2017 in a show
called Emerald City. Have you heard of this?
No, I think of Tin Man aren't. I Emerald City is a 2017 fantasy
TV series based on the Oz book series by Al Frank Baum.
Al Frank Baum Al Frank Baum So far, so cool.
A modern A modern retelling of the Wizard of Oz.
The series follows a young woman named Dorothy Gale who was
whisked away in the fantastic land of Oz by a tornado.
Joined by various companions, Dorothy unbox the Emerald City
to find them enigmatic Wizard of Oz and return home.
And for some reason they've all got guns.
I think they're all cops in it or something like that.
But there's an extensive page. Like there's there's an
extensive I was. Getting a howl from the it's.
Crazy, right? So I think they're all cops of
some kind, of all guns and shit. It's got Vincent.
It's enough. For you shit, should we look
into this as a team at some point?
Because I think it sounds insane, guys.
Yeah, it's got Oliver Dary Olufsson in it from Severance
Barley and Julie Richardson. And what a good cast.
Gina McKee, the northeast of England's own Gina McKee.
Cast Insane cast. Gina Bellman from Coupling.
And the and they've all got guns.
And it's the Wizard of Oz. What's going on?
It was. It was cancelled after one
season. There are 10 episodes.
Tell you what, I'll cook you a deal, mate.
We'll we'll cover this if you want, if you indulge me in
watching Karen Cisco with Carly Gugino.
Yeah, no doubt, man, no fucking doubt. 100%.
Absolutely clear and clear, clear and present TV dudes.
At some point I guess the backup piece that Crockett carries is a
Ditonix Pocket 9, which I think is a really cool little little
dingly and quite interesting and out of left field semi
automatic. Michael Man's a big gun guy as
you all know. I wonder if he's out there kind
of like picking the shit that I think looks cool.
The show was known for being the first screen appearances.
I think of such pistols like the Desert Eagle, like Sonny's
sidearm later in the show was like a Ruger 10 millimetre.
Obviously he's like a Frankie spouse 12.
Like guns that were cutting fucking edge at the time.
Michael Mann was obviously very excited about his armouring and
that's really fucking cool to me.
A really great cocaine woman. His fan towards he had Sonny
Crockett just bursts out of cover with the fucking cool
Model 654 rifle in one hand and his sidearm in the other.
And it's like that's so fucking cocaine.
It's like just use the rifle dude this that at this point
come on man it's just I did do a few Oh my God fucking the whole
point the screen and announced the name of the gun thing when I
was watching it with Emma which luckily she finds adorable.
I hope like I was like Oh my God fuck yes tech 9 which I realised
was on a K J9 so afterwards I beat myself up with sticks.
You go to the bathroom, hit yourself like stupid, stupid,
stupid, stupid. You know, you know that fucking
albino monk killer dude and the fucking it's like fucking
beating the shit out of themselves some kind of a crop
that's like me fucking misidentifying a KG 9 or KG 99
as a tech 9. And it's like, so although it's
a cool film with lots of fucking cool guns that I really enjoyed,
I won't believe by the point too much because it's a Michael Mann
film and he's absolutely gun pilled.
We should never ever do John Wick.
Would this film go well when the VHS and the Mass test is applied
to it? Would this film thrive?
Or, whether on VHS, the DVD player in the Mass award room or
barracks of military base or vessel.
I think I could make it work yeah if it would work.
I think I could I think I think I've got people on board with
the fact that we're having a Miami Vice on board sorry and
got got got this going on. I think I think maybe a few
themed drinks. I don't know.
Or I could actually can make mummy vices I'd.
Be class, actually, yeah. Especially on deployment, it's
kind of thing. You could really 111 episodes.
So you really get your teeth into it.
And there's a couple of those feature length ones.
So yeah. Especially end up doing like
drug and addiction duty or something like that.
Yeah. You've got.
Like a yeah, you've got U.S. Coast Guard debt on board.
Yeah, definitely. Hell yeah.
If you're doing like ACP North and you're like, yeah, yeah,
I'll be cool, yeah. Yeah, also I'll be really asking
if a film that has a bunch of women in bikinis and it is going
to do good in the mess. We are cause some ask these
questions Sonia, it's important. This is jealous.
This is something you've brought up several times, Sonia.
This this isn't as much a thing in the Royal Navy.
We don't watch as much porn in the We don't watch any porn in
the mess. I have seen it happen and it's
traumatised me. If you look common.
Always always comes back to second like.
I'm just imagining the way the way you paint this picture,
Saudi is like, it's like a bunch like German battlers or Sarah,
like idly watching the most fucked up shit going down.
It's like, yeah, well. It's.
It's. That's or fucking, I don't know,
frozen. There is no middle ground.
That's fucking mental honestly. Perfect.
It's it's it's we're we're going to watch a Disney movie or Oh my
God, there's an only fans video running as a screensaver in the
mess in the fucking officers wardrobe.
Jesus. That's really bad for me to be
for that to be the wardrobe, that's wild.
Like can you, can you, Jones? Aren't you fucking man?
Literally 80% of the reasons why I might not want to be at sea is
how disgusting people behave. Yeah.
The closest thing to get to that in the Royal Navy is having BBC
Breakfast on and Dakasha Paklinsky's there.
Like that's, that's ridiculous. Holy fuck man.
Wow. They played fucking porn in the
mess hall on the fucking sail training ship when we were on a
final run back to. Coach fuck.
More like Coach Fuck. Am I right?
Yeah. Yes, that's very good.
Well, I mean. We need to put a quick explain
that the name of that ship is the goal like.
Oh, we've got a ship that's got like 100.
Your dad's on it. Let's I know what to do.
OK, we're going to start off with some reviews from
letterbox.com, the two star ones.
On a quick search I couldn't find any one star reviews.
This film good. Two stars from someone called
Joey King of the Damned. Not funny.
I'm not watching this series. OK, Short saucer. 2 stars.
Some shit Tony Soprano would watch while eating ice cream on
his big belly. Jesus Christ.
Inflates you, making you big and round.
Fucking hell. Delete that sentence from my
brain please. Inflates you making you big and
round. Yes, inflates you Sonia, making
you big and round. There was there was only
literally 1234562 star reviews. Fucking hell, I guess, I guess
this film really is universally love.
Let's check the 2 1/2 stars out. Not enough, someone just goes.
59% from Michael Herzog relationship with Verna Herzog
unknown at this time. Clearly DVD of this I was
watching didn't have the last 10 or so minutes, but I get why
this show was a big deal. I love this guy watching Snade
DVD. He got like a mate of his who
like just knocks out like crap, fucking like pirates of it.
Fucking hell, man. Hey, man, I'm going to give like
Miami vice brothers keeper. There's only like 90% of the
film. So I'm like taking like 25 pay
off, you know, And and he has a Jaffa Cake as well for your for
your troubles. Like you would you would just
burn on another DVD, wouldn't you?
What the hell? Something really like pressure
to get it done. Was he really pushed?
When you get to the end, Texas and they'll tell you what
happens to the last 10 minutes. Four stars.
Now someone just says peak 80s. Absolutely.
I have no plans of watching the series, but folk man, this got
to be one of the hardest pilot episodes ever.
Crying emoji 100 fucking percent.
It really is in the air. Tonight's experience is blame
spring equals Miami Vice. I feel revived.
I can actually totally vibe with that opinion because for like a
significant amount of tonight, I've been filming filming this
with natural light coming into the window and it's like we made
it through winter. We fucking survived.
Thank God we did it. We Did it.
Probably the coolest TV pilot I've ever seen.
New found brotherhood in the midst of violence and betrayal,
confusing justice with vengeance.
It may seem cliched today, but you can tell this was a
watershed moment for television. Slick and modern, this is the
apex of 80s excess bars, fast cars, pastel Blazers and 80's
pop music. It's all in that moment when
Phil Collins plays as Crockett drives and slicks his hair back
and tubs loads a sawed off shotgun.
Fucking absolutely cool. It's getting some more good ones
here. Just look here.
I'm just going to go through the some dude called Mike Dunn Boss
says this is the coolest shit ever.
Four stars. It is a stamp.
Absolutely it is. It is the coolest shit ever.
Going through the through the popular reviews here.
Michael Mann is a fucking God. Five stars from Comrade UE or
Doctor UE perhaps, I do not know.
I now understand why fathers everywhere stop what they're
doing and bask in the majesty of Phil Collins.
Something in the air tonight. It's not something in the air
tonight. They got the name wrong on the
review, but still hidden. Who reviewed this on the 25th of
December 2022? I hope you had a fucking awesome
Christmas, dude. You for five stars.
Oh my God, bitch. The shootouts, the beautiful
women with all capitals, fat ass 4 SS, the drug deals.
Then they show the 4 kilos of cocaine.
Then boom the bomb happens. Then the suits all caps getting
assassinated to girls wanna have fun all night long Somebody's
Watching me by Rockwell. Phil Collins all capitals 8
exclamation marks when they played in the air tonight and
he's reloading the shotgun. I almost fucking left my body.
Wow the greatest pilot I've ever seen man Wow I swear to God give
me a fucking time travel machine.
This next bit is in all caps until I say it's not all caps.
Fuck this weird ass lame ass boring ass no fun having no
individuality generation. All caps ends.
I'm sick of it. I'm going to say it lame AF.
Take me to the east fuck Wow absolute swag My mom said my dad
dressed like that and the girls all caps loved that shit.
Caps ends then my my dad said he ain't wear that lame shit.
Should I binge this show? Is every episode this level of
good? Oh my God, I'm going to fucking
eggplant emoji, eggplant emoji, eggplant emoji, morning emoji,
morning emoji, morning emoji. And then that one like I guess
kind of cum drunk emoji, but it's about like a squiggle.
It's blushing. Fucking hell that Wed place.
Is evocative. There's a 4 1/2 star review here
from someone called Willow that just says better than the 2006
movie. Yeah, Sadia, I imagine.
A fortune, yeah. Sorry, Sania.
They're also, they're also, they're also 2 five star
reviews, both written in gin. And so someone's seeing it in
Gin, Yeah. Someone, someone's got it, got
it tailed in. Please keep.
Rubbing. What the dude is they're getting
like a DVD? I think the last 10 minutes just
chopped out. Let's go out.
You know, you know, you know, you know.
Sania would just do this out of love, right?
You're not bullying you. We love you man all.
Right, it's it's OK. Two out of three participants
enjoy bullying. Five stars tops is a whole boot
lip syncing. Somebody's watching me in a
strip club and loading sort of shotguns to in the air tonight.
Absolutely. Yeah, absolutely.
People love it. People love it absolutely.
Just. Fucking some of these reviews
are absolutely brilliant. More effective advertisement for
Florida than anything ever could be.
True, someone just put slaps. There's no star rating slaps.
Thank you Dan quit. It does indeed slap.
Few Have you been to Florida before?
Nope. Have you?
I went, I went once, but I went when I was 15 and it was like
immediately after 911. If I span you this day.
It was so strange. Yeah, OK, right.
So it was, it was like the 19th of September, I think we went.
So it was like a week after and the vibe was so strange because
obviously like America's reeling.
There's never experienced anything before.
And we were in the like the South, but like Florida South.
So a bit weird. And yeah, crazy.
Like I saw at one point I saw a pickup truck with like a
mountain machine gun in the back.
Like our tripods like ready ready to go.
Yeah, wild. All the all the TV channels were
just like constantly like fundraisers for like the the New
York Fire Department or the Fire Department of New York could say
FDNY and and it was all like the way the American flag like
waving with like phone numbers and stuff.
We went to like a car show and there was like people collecting
money for it. But the reason I bring all this
up is because I at the time, was sitting there at this car show.
There was like a dude playing music in front of me.
I was wearing a Metallica Master of Puppets T-shirt at the time.
And, and this girl and her brother started talking to me
when they heard me and Aaron talking because we were like
English. And they were like, Oh my God,
you're English. And they were like very
Floridian. And they both had like got these
necklaces that they'd got at the show somehow with like a
cannabis leaf on. And they were like probably
showing me these cannabis leaf necklaces they'd both had and we
were chatting away and then and their dad had sat behind me.
I didn't realise. And he was this big rough guy
with big grey beers, massive fella like covered in tarts and
stuff. I like a leather cowboy hat on
ridiculous. Like a like a like a stereotype.
Oh, hello. And, and like she's asking me
questions. Like do y'all do dancing like in
Titanic? And I'm like, what the fuck?
Like, yeah, So I danced like a like a, like a, like a little
peasant boy from 1912. And I was like, yeah, yeah,
yeah, yeah, we do all that. Like, do y'all know the Queen?
And I was like, oh, you didn't. Just seriously.
I was like, yeah, never once. Yeah.
And then she looks to her dad and goes, Daddy, can me and
Michael go walking? And he's like, he's like, no.
Record I was. Like and I was like, that's
probably for the best. Jesus Christ, that's amazing man
Good grief. And then we left.
But that was really strange. And yeah, no cues in the theme
parks, obviously. Yeah, Very, very, very strange
event all around. All I was to say that I didn't
get to go to Miami, didn't see any Miami Vice stuff.
I had a very different like family friendly pop.
Not one time that could have ended up with you being like hog
tied and dead in the Bayou. Yeah, there you go.
That's my story. I went to Florida.
I was 15. What, like is the coffee in the
bag? A flimsy cardboard cup of coffee
with a plastic lid? Just lucid a bag?
Who the hell do you think you are?
Who the hell do you think you are?
Wonderful. Is this film pro around ICI?
Oh, what the fuck? This film, I think it just
doesn't give a fuck, I think. I think it's pro alligator.
I think it's pro Central Intelligence alligators, but.
I don't know, like they haven't yet commented on on the CIA
getting involved in Central America, but I'm sure.
It sure does. The show does go on like
reference the CIA and it's involved in the centre of Latin
America and the death squads and stuff.
I believe and from G Gordon Liddy lately of the CIA is in
the show as a guest star. But at this point I think it's
CIA neutral. It's CIA agnostic.
That's CIA agnostic. I would say I agree.
The only other question I have before we get to the very end is
the video game, the PS2 video game.
But there already is a PS2 video game and it's called Grand of
Vice City. Some put out a random one here.
I know that Sonia told us in the Gunsharov episode that he's a
real big menswear guy, so I would like us to all say what
were favourite fit of the show was whose outfit fucked the
hardest. I'm sorry Sonia, you didn't
watch the film. Just do a quick, do a quick, do
a quick Google. Image search you keep seeing I
want us all who's. All do a quick Google image
search. As all the people look at this
film. Watch the film and and apply
your fucking menswear guy knowledge, because I'll tell you
one thing. I think the coolest element of a
fit is probably what that that that guy's stupid fuck ass
double belt that he wears, you know, a stupid thin fuck ass
white double belt. It's so, so silly.
It's so 80s is that is my fit element of the film.
But but as far as fit of the film goes, it's the white suit
and the T-shirt that is wearing when his best friends gets
exploded. I mean Crockett.
Yes, sorry, yeah, Crockett when Crockett wearing that cool ass
suit and then Jimmy Smith gets blown the fuck up.
Yeah, that's it. That that is the one I was
thinking of because he has a whole bunch of different fits.
They're all pretty. I mean they're all these fits
are pretty good in this episode, but that one these the like the
I don't what kind of colour green you'd call that?
Odinil. Odinil.
Odinil T-shirt. Not Lapus.
It's not blue, it's cerulean. I think you are Odinil.
What devils wear? Prada maxing my friend.
Really. Incredible scenes.
That Odinil T-shirt with the the white suits, absolutely gorgeous
face. Looks, looks cool.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's that's the threat
of the film. Sonya, I think you would have
had some spicy opinions, but the men's wearing stuff in this
film, if you had, if you had seen it, because there's some
wild cuts and there's some mad fucking decisions being made.
There's some people looking legit but.
I'm not a man's way I on on on Twitter who's awesome, but I
like the actual like flowy cuts of the trousers and stuff as
well. Like it's not it's not super
tight. It's not like a standard boot
cut. There's something else going on
there, but it looks really good. I'd love forget the men's
workout in the podcast, man. God man, I'd love that.
I love that. If you could, I'd watch this
film again having to talk about Don Johnson.
Should we, should we start like tweeting him and stuff and, and
like like threading at him and stuff?
I tweeted at him once when he was dissing fucking bucket hats
and I took a selfie, a selfie of myself wearing my strict on
bucket hat, my fucking East German camouflage bucket hat
that for some reason Prey box sold and he didn't respond.
So what you're saying is you've already?
Pissed. Well, that was years ago.
That was years ago. I've I've I've.
He seems like a guy would remember.
It seems a guy who's got a fucking book of bridges and a
list of enemies, but I love him for that.
You're just tweeting at him and he's he's like you're that cunt
with a stressed on bucket head on you.
I'm not interested. If I message, if I contact them
on threads, maybe it would be tarnished with the Twitter
contact I've had with them. I have I am, I am boring old
school. That's that's that's that's
that's my cover story. I live.
That's my cut. Actually.
I live on a dingy. That's my cousin throat more
than the skateboarder. I live.
I live on a dinghy in the River Blythe.
Under, under, under a fucking little one of those like
survival space blanket things that you put on people who are
in hypophobia. That's that's that's, that's my
Sonny Crockett slash Barry O'Toole houseboat.
Sunny. You were totally going to say
something earlier, but I think I cut you off by the way.
I'm sorry if I did. Yeah, I was just going to say I
usually just get cortisol spikes when I hear about T-shirts and
Blazers. Yeah.
Yeah, OK. I have to see that way too
often. Yeah.
Is is it a big thing where you are or the vice maxing where you
are? No, they're, they're not vice
maxing. They're not wearing linen
Blazers or something. It's, it's mostly former
military guys who return to university to be like a junior
lecturer and have forgotten they're not an army captain
anymore and think they can boss students around like they still
are. And they all, they all wear
sneakers, jeans, T-shirts, and the cheapest possible tweet
jacket they could find and it pisses me the fuck off because
they're all dressed the same and they're all.
Go off King. Yes, this is what I love about
this podcast but. How are you wearing trainers and
a tweet jacket like you? Absolutely.
And why are you wearing a white? T-shirt.
With it. Very judgmental.
Skinny jeans? Who is still wearing skinny
jeans in the year of Allah 2026? How skinny like proper like 2007
year of skinny jeans? Yes.
Did you just point it yourself? Skinny jeans one.
You're You're banned from buying your own menswear.
Fuck you man. Also how are, how are and to
make it worse, how is a slim fit tweet jacket even a thing?
I'd very much agree. That's fucked up dude.
Slim. Fit as a whole is a hate.
Crime. Yeah, those women are making
that in the head pretty easily. No, they're not.
Or they're singing, singing their their vocal songs on the
table outside while drenching the the tweed and urine we're.
Gonna make them skinny fit for the Tweedy twinks.
You know, it's like, no, no, I think we'd all agree that it's
like a slim fit tweed jacket and grim.
That was excellent. That was fucking amazing.
I think with that we are all the way through the categories.
I think we're always to the end of the 7th, but not on my
bombshell that. Bombshell The make has been
dropped. That very top, extremely Top
Gear coded run. But like I said, this is one of
the things I love most about the podcast.
We all bring our our different aspects of personalities to it.
And it just absolutely fucking was an amazing night with you
guys. Again, as it is every time.
So we. Gentlemen, Oh, hang on, before
we get into that, next time, our podcast will be Sailing of the
Seven Seas, won't it? Because the year is 1803.
Is it 3 or 4? I think it's one year before.
Trafalgar. Right before Trafalgar, isn't
it? Yeah, oceans are battlefields.
Are battlefields. And Sonya is finally going to
get his chance to talk long and hard over the subject of autism
mastering Commander Far Side of the World.
Don't tell me I see you fingering your bosons Call.
Because I just found that in my desk.
What? And I was like what the fuck?
About one of one of the only historical inaccuracies of the
movie is the use of that bosons call in one scene. 1 little
shrunky bit of some dead in goof.
Hey, I'll spoil it now though, we'll talk about it next.
Time so so hold fast and wait for the next episode.
Nice, cool. Well, in that case.
After all surprises on our sides.
Beautiful free cheers for lucky Jack.
Okay boys, we we've been clear.
Podbean
